I e-mailed my local sports editor about the lack of coverage on the NCAA championships. He responded that with all that was going on, they had just missed seeing the wrestling coverage on the wire. I didn't think this was much of a reason until I found this article. With activity like this going on, how can wrestling hope to compete:

While March Madness dominates intercollegiate athletics, another group of collegians works out amidst coaches' whistles, endures bloody, 12-hour practices, and cheers on teammates preparing for the national championship in meat-judging, in which about 40 colleges compete, according to a March Wall Street Journal report. Coaches at powerhouses like Colorado State and South Dakota State say skills such as evaluating T-bone cutting and spotting whether a pig has too much back fat come with determination and concentration (and, of course, practice, as one coach said it all comes down to time spent in the meat locker, at 38 degrees (Fahrenheit)). Maybe they can come and judge college HWTs.

My best friend from high school was on the meat judging team at the University of Illinois in the mid-80s. She loved it, and I'm sure she put those skills to use when she came back home to the family farm. Of course, she went on to become a lawyer, so I'm not sure it's turned out to be all that useful.
