This is intended as a warning for any others on FiOS as opposed to my tale of woe.

My Cable router died yesterday. Called Verizon and they were real helpful confirming it had passed to the great electronics pile underground. Okay so where can I pick up a replacement ? I can't, they have to ship it in and it can't be delivered until next Wed.

Huh ? Verizon stores carry TV set top boxes, remotes, phone equipment, everyting 'cept the cable routers and the FiOS hardware has not been replicated by any aftermarket producer. You can't buy anything FiOS compatible in Best Buy, Cirucit City or anywhere else, other than used on eBay.

So here I sit at the library catching up on work I couldn't finish yesterday without internet access.

I take it that this diagnosis was made over the phone by the online tech support dept. You should have demanded that a FIOS tech be dispatched to your house. First off a tech on site can prove that the trouble is in fact the router and not the ONT or the cable running from the ONT to the router (cat 5e if ethernet proviosioned or coax if MOCA proviosioned.). Second, the techs carry replacements. Still not too late to demand a dispatch IMO.

Not to hijack this thread but I had to talk to someone in New Delhi, India today to arrange a hotel room in Rochester, New York for next weekend.

Ouch ! That would not have been good.

Anyway, I found someone on eBay selling one about 50 miles away for $20, bought and the guy was kind enough to meet me so I could pick it up. Hooked it up, and bingo back in business. I haven't canceled the order yet, I'll wait to see if they bill me for it. The techie said no, a freebie, but a second person said yes because it was out of warranty. So far I've spoken with 4 people that had their systems relocated and the service rep hooked a new router, free, and left the old one behind. If they bill me, I'll have to pay a visit to their world headquarters which is about 3 miles from here.

Vak, haven't had any billing issues.....yet.
