The 06 World Series of Poker championship had some 8700 players anteing 10,000 to play. That means each player started with 10,000 in chips for a total of about 87,000,000 million in play.

At the final table the 9 players started with 91,000,000 at the table. Now the players never leave with their chips. You leave them on the table at the end of the day and the house counts and records your winnings. On the next day your chips are placed at your assigned seat.

Well, if there was 87 mil at the start, how did 4 mil more enter the game ?

That is the subject of a Las Vegas Gaming Commission investigation now going on in Vegas right now.

I can't believe they wouldn't total the chips in play each night. So, at least they should know which day it happened if nothing else.

I know after certain rounds they take out certain chip values that are of virtually no use and round you up to the next chip. Maybe this is how they got an extra $4 million in chips.

Good point Champ, but they don't round up enough to make that much of a difference. I'm pretty sure this controversy has been around for quite some time now though, I remember hearing about it last year.

With 8700 players it could easily reach into the millions. Consider 4000 made the second day and if they all were given an extra $100, it would add up to $400K. Then as they get rid of the $1000 and $10,000 chips it gets bigger and bigger.

Also with 8700 people, I'm sure there are a few cheaters that would find a way to get some extra money.

It doesn't really work like that though. They do a thing called "racing off" for the extra chips, which doesn't really result in much of a change. I'd try to explain it but wikipedia does a lot better job.

We're talking alittle under 5% of the total chips in play. I think that is a significant number, particularly if there is a little, no alot, of cheating behind it.

If someone is bringing in $2,000,000 in chips, that is significant enough to impact the outcome.

Maybe all the players should just have "virtual chips" and have a counter with them to tell them how much they have. I doubt they will ever have any problems doing it like that.

I remember reading this article several months ago. Anyway, it explains why the chip count problem was almost certainly a mistake made by a floor person rather than cheating or simple chip race inflation.
