This team reminds me of some of the team in the 80's. Lots of over the hill guys who's best years are well behind them. Giambi will never be the hitter he was before Balco got busted, Jeter is at that age when non-juicing players start to decline, Matsui is old period, Damon has no arm and is past his prime, A-rod has never produced when it counted, Doug Mientkiewicz saw his best years in Minnesota.........George is constantly bringing in guys after their career year and paying them as though they've been putting up those numbers consistently.

That leaves two young players with promise...Cano and Melky.

If anyone should go it's Brian Cashman for giving Torre this old folks home of a team to work with.

I posted this in another thread.

If Torre has to go, I hope Donnie Baseball gets the job.
I think we could get rid of Moose, Roger, Farnsworth, Mariano, Damon, Giambi, Abreu, and Pavano by dumping all these guys you could bring up your young talent buy a couple of younger better starters and be better off in the long run.

Starting rotation for next year (my list)

not sure who I would keep, get some freeagents.

A-Rod is in his opt out year. Rivera's contract is up. Both will be leaving if Torre is not rehired. Big George wants A-Rod to set the HR record as aYankee. It would kill George to not have that record set pinstripes.

I don't think Mattingly is ready just yet. If he steps in now he will be saddled with a bag a bones on the bench and they'll give him the axe in 18 months. Donnie is getting set up for a fall. George would rather have Pinella on the bench, but he can't get him right now.

Nice post! I agree completely. As Ryou said, I'm not sure Donny Baseball is ready yet, but you never know.

I know they've put a lot more effort into building their farm system in the last few years and not trading away all of their prospects, but I'm not up on what they have in the pipeline. I used to be up on it a bit more when the Clippers here in C-bus were the AAA affiliate.

I like that you mention keeping Matsui. The guy is consistent and really knows how to drive in runs. Pure professional hitter...make a mistake and he'll go yard, but he's willing to shorten up and put the ball in play to drive in a run if he has to.

As for the free agent to replace A-rod......at least one free agent comes to mind that George would like to steal and that's Mike Lowell. He's solid and they could get him for about 10 to 15 mil a year less than re-signing A-rod.
