CHICAGO - A "surge" of overused words and phrases formed a "perfect storm" of "post-9/11" cliches in 2007, according to a U.S. university's annual list of words and phrases that deserve to be banned.

Choosing from among 2,000 submissions, the public relations department at Michigan's Lake Superior State University in Sault Ste. Marie targeted 19 affronts to the English language in its well-known jab at the worlds of media, sports, advertising and politics.

The contributors gave first prize to the phrase "a perfect storm," saying it was numbingly applied to virtually any notable coincidence.

    That was pretty good.

I'd like to add one to the list. Why does every scandal now have the word "gate" added to the end of it? Also, how many times do people assign any above average game, or event with the phrase "instant classic"?

It really pretty sad that many in the media are simply unable to be creative in their use of the language. I loved the quote that those creating the list were encouraging the media outlets to issue a thesaurus to anyone in front of a camera. That was good.

I was hoping "It is what it is" would be on there. It bothers the hell out of me.

That and ___gate to whatever is the latest scandal.

The most overused sports phrase is "historic", as in Varner had a historic win over Herbert.

I will smash your face into a car windshield and then take your mother, Dorothy Mantooth, out to a nice seafood dinner and never call her again!

Tell me about it, this morning, I woke up and I shit a squirrel, but what I can't get is the damn thing is still alive. So now, I've got a shit covered squirrel running around my office and I don't know what to name it.
