Where I live the cables are underground but some moron skid loader driver hit the enormous green transformer box that no one could possibly not see, and blew something and our power was off for 2 hours.

Big, like I said before, submit everything to your insurance company and let them figure it out. That's a service that's included in the premium you ( your parents) pay. They'll recover from either Con Ed or the truck owner including you're deductible, though the deductible will come after the settlement. It's called a contingent property loss.

.......I guess you don't buy homeowners insurance. If you had, you'd have cash in hand by now.

Electrical wires underground don't seem like an advancement to me... have a rodent bite through one while building a nest, or have its exterior deteriorate from frost upheaval... then you have live electricity running under your feet... lovely..

I am sure the wires underground are properly insulate with steel even if need be to protect any deterioration. Engineers that make these plans are not that stupid.

Oh and transformers in Russia were mounted on huge steel trees like 100 feet tall that were virtually impossible to knock down and they were usually way away from the roads.

Big, steel is a conductor not an insulator. They feed the insulated wire through plastic pipe. It's not a good idea to encase electric wiring in steel which will corrode underground and erode through electrolosis.

Schoshke - the pipe is plastic to be a secondary insulator and it also flexes with ground movement.

Shloshke - I guess you don't know what the term ground means in electrical jargon.
