    Default Captain Freed from Pirates

    http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/piracy

MOMBASA, Kenya ? An American ship captain was freed unharmed Sunday in a swift firefight that killed three of the four Somali pirates who had been holding him for days in a lifeboat off the coast of Africa, the ship's owner said.

A senior U.S. intelligence official said a pirate who had been involved in negotiations to free Capt. Richard Phillips but who was not on the lifeboat was in custody.

Phillips, 53, of Underhill, Vermont, was safely transported to a Navy warship nearby.

Glad the Captain made it out.

Its time to start using our drones to take these guys out before they get the shot to do stuff like this as situatons like this are starting to get ridiculous.

They weren't ready the first go round when he dove off the boat. They must have let him get a little space separation before unloading from the destroyer.

Good ending. Drone attacks would be great, but if they armed all American flagged vessels we wouldn't even need to spend the money flying them around the horn of Africa.

good point JensenS; in today's technological world it can't be that hard to take care of some somali pirates. I don't know much about millitary technology, but surely it's not too hard to detect ships on the ocean with radar or google Earth or whatnot.

That's what I was thinking. Wouldn't it be cheaper to have armed security personnel aboard these ships than to pay the ransoms?

The problem with "armed" security is the laws of the various ports these ships dock in. Until they all "come aboard" in agreement as to what is aloud as far as self protection of these boats, in various ports, it is problematic to put that sort of security on board.

Too bad. Even if the armed guards stay aboard it would be a problem?

An ironic twist to today's events is that the cargo of the hijacked ship was humanitarian supplies for the Somali people - supplies they desparately need.

Drone weaponry is not so accurate as yet to be able to take out specific individuals in close quarters; hence, the need for Navy Seal snipers. The question is, were they on board the destroyer or choppered in during the night.
