Default BCS Changes the Rules and Slights Hawai'i

The BCS just changed the rules for qualifying for the 5 biggy bowls and it hinders Hawai'i's chance for a BCS bowl.

Until yesterday, to qualify, a team had to have at least 9 wins, and be ranked in the top 14 of the BCS calculator. No more than 2 schools from any one conference can go to a BCS.

Not anymore. If there are not 10 teams with 9 wins ranked in the top 14, they will allow the bowls to choose from those ranked 15 to 18 and if that doesn't get them 10 teams with 9 wins, they can look at No.s 19 - 22.

BCS Team Rank - Record - (Conference Position - (Bowl Qualifier)
    1 LSU 10-1 (SEC - 1) (1)
    2 Kansas 11-0 (Big 12 - 1) (2)
    3 West Virginia 9-1 (Big East -1) (3)
    4 Missouri 10-1 (Big 12 - 2) (4)
    5 Ohio State 11-1 (Big Ten - 1) (5)
    6 Arizona State 9-1 (PAC 10 - 1) (6)
    7 Georgia 9-2 (SEC - 2) (7)
    8 Virginia Tech 9-2 (ACC - 1) (8)
    9 Oregon 8-2 (PAC 10 - 2) (9)
    10 Oklahoma 9-2 (Big 12 - 3) (does not qualify, conference limit)
    11 USC 8-2 (PAC 10 - 3) (does not qualify, conference limit)
12 Florida 8-3 (SEC - 3) (does not qualify, conference limit)
13 Texas 9-2 (Big 12- 4) (does not qualify, conference limit)
    14 Boston College 9-2 (ACC -2) (10)
    15 Hawaii 10-0 (WAC - 1) (11)
16 Virginia 9-2 (ACC - 3) (does not qualify, conference limit)
    17 Illinois 9-3 (Big 10 - 2) (12)
18 Tennessee 8-3 (SEC - 4) (does not qualify, conference limit)

If any of the top 7 lose, they'll probably stay in the top 14. If USC loses to AZ State and Oregon loses to UCLA, both may fall outside the top 14. Same for Boston College, a loss may knock them back of No. 14.

What's unfair, if Hawai'i wins, and BC, OR and UCS lose, that would make Hawai'i the last qualifier, but at number 9. To get to 10, they open up slots 15-18. Since the bowls get to chose the at-large slots, in theory, a bowl could snub Hawai'i and take a higher ranked team which would be either Virginia, Illinois or even one of the top 14 losers the slips into the 15-18 grouping.

SEC 1 - LSU and 7 Georgia or 12 Florida (even LSU loses, they'll qualify
    Big 12 - 2 Kansas and 4 Missouri, 2 Kansas and 10 Oklahoma, or 4 Missouri and 10 Oklahoma
Big East - 3 West Virginia
Big Ten - Ohio State 11-1, maybe Illinois if enough lose
PAC 10 - 6 Arizona State and 9 Oregon, or 9 Oregon and 11 USC, or 6 Arizona State and 11 USC
ACC - 8 Virginia Tech and 14 Boston College 9-2

    15 Hawaii 10-0 (WAC - 1) (11) (bubble team)
16 Virginia 9-2 (ACC - 3) (bubble team if Boston College loses)
    17 Illinois 9-3 (Big 10 - 2) (bubble team)

13 Texas 9-2 (too many from Big 12 ahead of them, unlikely to move ahead of Missouri or Oklahoma even if Mizzou and Kansas and Oklahoma wins)
18 Tennessee 8-3 (SEC - 4) (too many from the SEC ahead of them and won't pass 2 of them even if LSU, Georgia, and Florida lose )

    BCS = JOKE

Give us a playoff system, and stop changing the rules in midstream.

I agree that changing the rules midway is absolutely retarded (was a victim of this in high school at the state tournament for getting (er, not getting) Outstanding Wrestler, so I feel for them), but honestly, is there a team ranked in the top 25 that Hawaii could beat? I mean I'm sure they "could" beat some of them, but they really aren't very good. [Insert Boise State argument from last year here, even though they aren't half as good as BSU was last year IMO]

I guess find out Friday when Hawai'i takes on Boise State.

Okay so they were afriad of not have 10 eligible teams in the top 14, then why not say the next eligible team is in, instead of saying the next group of 4 ?

That's where I see Hawai'i getting snubbed....allowing the bowls to chose from a group.

I agree that changing the rules mid-season is a joke. But then so is the concept of the BCS in the first place.

However, I also agree that there's a reason why Hawaii's computer average is 22. Should they have a shot at being this year's Boise St. if they win out, why not. If they get hammered it won't be any worse than Ohio State's peformance last year in the title game.
