Re: Another pet peeve of mine The part of the name WWE that drives me nuts is Wrestling. Folks who don't know any better get that silliness confused with the sport we know and love. Crazy as that sounds, I find myself explaining the difference to my friends who wonder why I'm a fan of and writing about something that involves being hit over the head with a folding chair. ;-(
I remember when Tom Brokaw was the chief anchorman at NBC Nightly News and had to report on the WWE performer who fell to his death in Kansas City, made a real point of pronouncing Vince McMahon's circus as being "rasslin'" -- a slight distinction, but one that I'm sure Brokaw intended to make.
As for the World part... in doing my amateur wrestling historical research, it's been funny to learn that some pre-WWE rasslers who played foeign bad guys were actually All-American guys. Prime example: Baron von Raschke was actually Jim Raschke, AA heavyweight for the University of Nebraska in the early 1960s... about as far from Germany as one can get.
