Greatest athlete? Right now I would have to go with Ashton Eaton. Ten different events - and he was so far ahead in points by the time he got to the 1500 he could mail it in. That is dominance!

Let's see Bolt try this !! Or get into a cage with a MMA artist .
H3ll, just put him on the mat with one of the wrestlers. If the qualification for greatest athlete ever is running really fast in a straight line, I have two of the greatest sleeping on my living room couch.

Decathalon is impressive, but it's not like hes the best in the world at 10 events. He's just the best at the combination of the 10. I don't think he is actually world class in any one event. Know what I mean? Maybe that's ignorant of me, but it's kind of like a jack of all trades master of none.

That sums up the decathalon about as well as you can.

I find the mixed sports fascinating - and see them as much more difficult than a single activity. Swimmers mass tremendous numbers of medals - for doing basically the same thing over different distances. Runners tend to do the same thing. You can win gold in the 25 meter, 52 meter, 101 meter, 127 meter, 224 meter, 312 meter, and 399 meter sprints. Hey, everybody, I am the greatest athlete that ever lived!
I see something like the decathlon as much more challenging. Run - the 100, 400, and the 1500. Jump - long jump, high jump, and pole vault. Combine the two with the 110 meter hurdles. Throw - discus, shot, and javelin. Speed, power, and technical finesse.
I would love to see a return of the original Olympic pentathlon - Sprint, discus, javelin, long jump, and wrestling!
Actually, my favorite event of all is modern pentathlon. Designed to test the skills of a Napoleonic era aide-de-camp, you have to show mastery of riding, fencing, pistol shooting, swimming, and running.
In the winter games, I love the biathlon. I can think of no more difficult athletic skill than attempting to hit a very small target with a rifle while your heart is racing and your lungs screaming for more air. Well, maybe hitting the curve ball. I couldn't do that, either!

Somewhat true.. Jackie Joyner-Kersee was an exception she won Heptathlon Gold and Gold in long jump, if I remember correctly her times in the high hurdles were world class as well. She was also a basketball star at UCLA.

When I followed track more closely I remember a lot of the top decathletes were guys who were almost but not quite good enough in their own events to be world class. Pole Vaulters in particular seemed to crossover to decathlon.

    From wikipedia:
As of May 2012, Joyner-Kersee holds the world record in heptathlon along with the top six all time best results whilst her long jump record of 7.49 m is second on the long jump all time list. In addition to heptathlon and long jump, she was a world class athlete in 100 m hurdles and 200 meters being as of June 2006 in top 60 all time in those events.

Was just coming to post that. That beats their time from Beijing by almost 7 tenths of a second.
