That is interesting, and a great testament to how people respond to music.

I once worked as a social worker for the developmentally disabled (mentally retarded), and many of those folks' best days were when they played their music.

On a related note, my mom is in a nursing home (Alzheimer's patient) and the environment is so stale that it makes me wonder if she would respond to music, much as others seem to. They have boom boxes in there and a ton of music, but I just never see anyone playing it.

My wife's grandma lived with us for her final 2-3 years. She was in her early 90s with Alzheimer's. Only two things really made her "come alive". One was asking her about where she used to work (42yrs in a paper mill), and the other was Big Band music. She would tap her foot, slap her knee and try to whistle along. Music really does bring a soul alive.

When my grandmother was in a coma, my wife and I sang "Amazing Grace" to her. Her blood pressure that had been high came down and her oxygen level which was hovering around 88 rose to 96. I am a firm believer that music heals.

By the way, that happened about 10 years ago.

Out of all the arts Music is the most "abstract" on a physical level but that translates into it being really the most spiritual communication we actually have on Earth.

When people learn song writing you learn very quickly that songs in a MAJOR key are uplifting while music written in a MINOR key bring you down. If you watch any film the real emotion of the piece is the music. Watch the action with the sound down & it loses its impact.

Then try listening to the soundtrack without watching. You will see very quickly what I mean.

If you ever read or watched The Lord Of the Rings you might know the author JRR Tolkien.

He wrote a pre-quel called The Similarion. In it he tells his "creationist" tale in which heaven was originally a place of SONG & harmony. Yet one of the gods who was very talented wanted his voice heard above all others & thusly ruined the harmony & created "division" & hence this lead to the downfall of this god & the creation of the physical world.

I find some truth in that story for myself personally. And I always feel that music is actually not really an "art form" but a spiritual language whose very vibrations can life our emotions so high towards life both finite & eternal OR throw us in tot he deepest depths of despair.

Listen Mozart's requiem to see what I mean.

This piece on you tube has 20 million hits alone!

If this does not bring you to tears at some point while listening check to make sure you have a heart...
