Thread: Inflation?

    Default Inflation?

My daughter is studying in England for a year and her birthday is coming up. For her present, she wants the money to buy the warm-ups, sweats, and jacket for her rugby team (she went from college wrestler to rugby player - and I think we may have lost her!) So I went to a conversion site to figure out how much to put in her bank account - converting 88 pounds to US dollars. While I was at it, I converted that US$125 (rounded) to Zimbabwe dollars. It comes to Z$4679175437.5
I am thinking about opening an account in Zimbabwe and putting a couple of hundred into it just so I can show people my bank statement!

I always like getting a receipt from the ATM when vacationing in Mexico for this reason.... makes me feel 10x richer!

Why do I suspect that investing in Zimbabwe government bonds isn't a real good idea?

Probably a better idea to sink all of it into IAG or Chrysler......

I was trying to prove a point to my daughter the other night. I still have my University of Maryland catalog from 1980-81 (don't ask) and wanted to show her that ONE class at the college she will attend next year costs more than the tuition and fees for the ENTIRE year when I was at Maryland. Cost was just under $900 per year back in the day!

But then again, I looked at the admission standards back then....
"Strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of government!?

NPR did a story on inflation in Zimbabwe over the summer, it seems people get paid and have to run strait to the maket because if they waited til the next day their money would have lost almost all of it's value.

I should think that by the time you could count out the money for a purchase the value of the money would change! If I remember correctly, haven't they already knocked zeros off the bills, reprinted, etc. to "reduce" the inflationary effect on currency?
Is there some way I can get a job in Zimbabwe, transfer back to the states, and keep my "salary"?

I worked a few years in West Africa, while in Zaire, now DRC, I would buy a round of beers with a US $20.00 bill and receive a 2" high stack of change in bills. The local beer, Tembo & Skol cost around $.35 each. Needless to say after a few rounds I just left the remainder change as a tip.
I also have around 3 million old Zaireian 'Z's" and use as conversation items, "Look I'm a Millionare". The government would print money at an alarming rate and then cancel and re-issue new monies when they felt like it.
