Thread: Cleveland State gets to Dance!

Default Cleveland State gets to Dance!

CSU won the final of the Horizon League conference basketball tournament avenging two regular season loses, and on Butler's home floor. Fantastic job. This will be only CSU's second appearance. That other showing came in 1986 when they pushed Indiana's season "over the brink" with a first-round upset. After beating St. Joseph in the next round they were one bad referee call away from an elite 8 appearance. In that game with a couple of seconds left instead of calling a foul on Navy (IT WAS DEFINITE FOUL) the ref called a jump ball with Navy having the possession arrow. David Robinson bulled his way to the rim for the winning bucket.

Congratulations to the Vikings. They will be a low seed for sure, but maybe they can spring an upset or two.

I watched that game. Down 19 early in the forth. Only the will power of Lebron James was keeping them from going down 30. Then it turned around. When the Cavs got it down to a 6 point deficit with four minutes left, you knew it was over for the Clippers.

Lebron James is really underappreciated nationally. Seems funny to say. But you've got to watch him play every day. When you do you don't worry about comparisons or putting him into categories. He's DIFFERENT than all of the others. Kobe Bryant is at his peak. James, some years younger, is not yet. If he actually learns to shoot 18 footers (and he might) forget about it.

Ken, Did you hear about that Cleveland State 86 team? Coach Mackey was caught in a crack house a couple of year's after that showing and was booted in disgrace. I don't remember if he served time. Last I heard he was coaching in the NBA "minor" leagues, trying to regain some footing or balance in his life. The 86 Indiana team was the subject of the book "Season on the Brink" (I believe).

Great book, and yes it was the 85-86 season. With an epilogue at the end about the '87 championship team.

I thought you may have seen the full page retrospective on Mackey that the PD printed last year. He's now a scout for the Pacers I think after coaching the NBA minors for quite a while.

That CSU team had captured the imagination of the fans. Though they ended the year at 29-4 and won their league, the AMCU didn't have an automatic bid. Fans sweated out their eventual selection, but I thought they had to be picked. They had spent the year in the top ten of the Sagarin ratings and had the largest margin of victory in the nation. Bobby Knight couldn't have been happy that they drew CSU (as a 14 seed!) in the first round. It led to some fairly testy news conferences, before and after. For the first 4 minutes (or 5 or 6--the number grows in the telling), when the game started, Indiana couldn't even inbound the ball against the CSU press. It cost an early time out. That was significant. Indiana KNEW the press was coming, because CSU played full court press from the opening tip of EVERY game. The most famous CSU player, of that group, was Kenny "The Mouse" McFadden, recruited because he was a NY City playground legend, followed by Clinton Ramsey, but their best player was Clinton Smith, who got some NBA time.

That team took the city by storm, and should have gotten the win against Navy. Stupid ref.

Coach Gary Waters was the head at Rutgers before going to CSU. Well it looks like he beat Rutgers to the dance. Great coach, just couldn't snag the NJ top tier talent, but then again no coach in the past 35 years has been able to.
Life's not the breaths you take, the breathing in and out that gets you through the day ain't what it's all about. It's the moments that take your breath away.

13th seed Cleveland State CRUNCHES Wake Forest!!!!

When Wake cut a big margin down to 6 with about 10 minutes left, I thought the home boys were in trouble. But reality set in and they pushed the lead back out to double digits. How about those Vikings.

    Shades of the 86 team.
