Thread: Just call me Daniel Boone . . . .

Default Just call me Daniel Boone . . . .

About a week ago a feral momma cat and her 4 kittens appeared in our back yard. I don't mind feeding them (good thing, because the women took over and the kitties are soooooooooo cuuuuuuuuuuttteeeee!!!!!!). But if you have 5 feral cats, in a year you have 100, so something had to be done.
Luckily, we have the Valley Veterinary Clinic Charitable Non-Profit Corporation in our area. The same day I called them I got a call back. The next day two really nice ladies showed up with traps and cat food for bait. We set the traps this evening. I just checked, and about 1 1/2 hours after setting the traps we have three of the little darlings caged. Tomorrow, the lady comes back to collect our catch (hopefully, all 5). She will take them to the clinic where they will be examined, given shots, fixed, and marked (an ear tip clipped off). A couple of days from now, they will be returned to my back yard - where I will continue to feed them - but only them, not their endless progeny.
So we have trapped 3. Mighty hunter! According to the experts, feral cats aren't real trap savvy. As long as they are hungry (we stopped feeding this AM) and food is available, they will enter the trap. I hope so. I have visions of having to pit my skills against the wiley wild cat, better and better baits, camouflaged traps, beaters working through the bush driving the panicked prey into the cleverly laid pitfall . . . .

Got em! Trapped the last one yesterday and he is recovering from surgery in my garage. Tomorrow morning he will be released into the back yard. It is a small thing - but there are 5 cats that won't be adding to the unwanted pet population.
Now, if I can slip a couple of these traps into the yard of my neighbor with the yappy chihuahuas. . . .
Valley Veterinary Clinic has just made the top of my list for Christmas contributions.

I wish we had your knowledge about feeding stray cats. My wife started feeding a weakly looking kitten this past summer. We have a long standing agreement of no cats in the house as long as she doesn't have to walk the dog. Well......we now have three living in our garage and another that comes around every morning and evening around feeding time. I don't really mind them, but you are not kidding about them multiplying.

BTW, our 100lbs boxer gets along great with them. When we let him out, the cats will lay on their back and let him sniff their belly. The only time it came to paw-a-cuffs was when one of them had a dead bird in his mouth and Pete (the dog) walked over to see what was going on. The cat smacked him across his floppy jibs, but no claws out, it was just a warning shot.

Even thought I am more of a dog guy than a cat guy, I applaud you for taking care of them. Most would've just let them starve or taken them to a shelter.

Something like "My time has come, I'm leaving now,?" Not positive but I think it was somewhere along those lines. Why do you ask?

You know, I think I would rather be a man than a god . We don't need anyone to believe in us. We just keep going anyhow. It's what we do.

"If we let them take over they'll never stop crossing the border."
Life's not the breaths you take, the breathing in and out that gets you through the day ain't what it's all about. It's the moments that take your breath away.

Daniel Boone wasn't at the Alamo, Davey Crockett was. (But since Fess Parker played them both, you could stretch the point.)

We trap cats all summer long babies my wife finds homes for; the rest go to animal control. We had an infestation of feral cats about two years ago. There must have been about 50 in our neighborhood. Only the stupid ones came in my back yard. Three dogs and they don't like cats in their yard. They are good with the kittens though.
