Mentally ill patient was waving a pistol around (seems he caught his wife and a theatre manager together), so instead of shooting his cheating wife or his cuckold he stuck the pistol to his head . then , a Danville Policeman SHOT the pistol out of the guys hand .

here is the paper's account of this event.
DAVILLE ? Officials here were on the scene of a police-action shooting that occurred Friday morning in the 400 block of West Lincoln Street.
Det. Bill Wright of the Danville Police Department said they got a call about 10 a.m. from a woman who said her son was threatening to commit suicide. Officers arrived to find the man, age 38, in an "extremely agitated state."
"He did have a firearm and was waving it around, and pointed it at his head at one time," Wright said. "The situation escalated to where officers were in fear for his safety and theirs."
Assistant Police Chief Ron Kneeland shot the man in his hand. The subject, whom police are not yet identifying, was transported to a hospital for treatment.
Officers were still trying to determine what the man was upset about.

Wow! I wasn't there - and it is tough to criticize a guy for making that kind of a shot and saving the subject's life - but wow! What a risk. I am a pretty good shot, both with handgun and rifle. I've shot competitively, and in combat. I would HATE to have to make that shot! The hand is a really small target, it is moving, it is near the subject's head - a miss and the guy pulls the trigger just in reaction and the newspapers have a completely different headline.
I have to give props to the officer gutsy (and skilled) enough to pull this off. But I bet the only thing that is keeping him from a review board is that it worked!

mike,
you are the only person to agree with me . i would NEVER have taken that shot . Downside 99% // upside 1% . Had the officer missed -which should have happened -the guy could have gotten off several shots or killed himself . I've met officer Kneeland , and although a nice enough guy , images of the wild west trick shot shootists do NOT pop into your minds when you meet him . a coupla MM off and you have a shoot out or worse on your hands . NOT the way i'd handled it .
