Default Football question

How many back up qb's have been on a Superbowl winning team then gone on to win a Superbowl as a starter? For example Steve Young after Joe Montana and Matt Hasselback after leaving Green Bay.

Jim Plunkett, Heisman winner, had a great rookie year with the Pats but then it was all down hill for him. He joined the Oakland Raiders in 1978 was the back-up for the next two years, he didn't even get in a game in 1978.

Five weeks into the 1980 NFL season starting QB Dan Pastorini broke his leg in a game against the Kansas City Chiefs. Plunkett came off the bench to relieve Pastorini and threw 5 interceptions.

Plunkett to started the remainder of the year. In his first game as a starter, he completed eleven of fourteen passes with a touchdown and no interceptions, beginning one of the greatest comeback stories in the history of sport. Plunkett guided Oakland to nine victories in eleven games and a playoff berth as a wild-card.

Plunkett then led the Raiders to four playoff victories, including the first-ever victory by a wild card team in the Super Bowl, defeating the Philadelphia Eagles, 27-10, in Super Bowl XV.

EArl Morral is widely known as the greates quarterback off the bench. He was a Rookie aroung 1956 and had an illustrious career with a number of teams.

In 68, he was with the Baltimore Colts. Johnny Unitas was injured in the final exhibition game, Morrall became the team's starter. Morrall proceeded to lead the Colts to a 13-1 record, then added two playoff victories en route to winning the NFL's Most Valuable Player award, leading the Colts into Super Bowl III.

You remember Super Bowl III don't you ? Guess not. In one of sport's greatest upsets in the history of sport, the Colts lost 16-7 to the New York Jets.

Two years later, Morrall again replaced an injured Unitas in Super Bowl V, but the occasion proved to be much happier as the Colts won 16-13 over the Dallas Cowboys on a 32-yard field goal by Jim O'Brien at the end of regulation.

In 72, Morrall was claimed on waivers for $100 by the Miami Dolphins and his former Colt head coach, Don Shula. Morrall replaced the injured Bob Griese for the Dolphins during an October game. The victory gave Miami a 5-0 record, with Morrall building on that win to lead the team to the first undefeated regular season in the NFL since 1942.

After notching a win in the team's first playoff game against the Cleveland Browns, Morrall struggled against the Pittsburgh Steelers in the AFC Championship game, leading to the return of Griese.

Morrall was named American Football Conference Player of the Year 1972 along with the inaugural NFL Comeback Player of the Year Award.

Was thinking the same thing. But I think we'll let it slide, news don't make it out to Kansas too quick.
