I suspect Mr. Askinme will be surrounded by "socialists" wherever he goes. No bull.

I spent a short visit as a guest of the government near Fayettville - somehow I missed the wonder of the state.

Umm, yeah, the Fayetteville area is kinda the armpit of the state.

I was there too, many moons ago. Now the Commandant or his representatives keep sending me letters about the water. Fayetteville is where I first drank green beer.

That's funny, I had a somewhat lower opinion of it.

I went through the SERE Course (Survival, Evasion, Resistance, Escape) there. The worst 19 days of my time in the Army. Nothing in Viet Nam was as bad as what they did to me at Camp MacKall. It may have tainted my view a bit.

Dementia may be setting in. My time spent in North Carolina was in Jacksonville (which if you look on a map could be an armpit), not Fayetteville (looks more like the gut of the state).

I was born in Jacksonville. Grandfather was a career marine and spent his last 20+ years at Camp Lejeune.

I was there in '76. I hope they have resolved the water problem or we may both be in trouble. Who knows what we were drinking (well, besides the green beer). I remember the tall pines, and if I'd bothered to spend any time away from Lejeune (which I would now but didn't then) I'm sure I would have seen more beauty in the state.

On tangentially-related subject, I watched the Caine Mutiny (1954) last night--almost all set on a Navy ship, and in a Navy court. What a really great movie.
