Default Selig may pull the plug on Bonds and ARod

Baseball commissioner Bud Selig on Wednesday left open the possibility of punishing New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez for using performance-enhancing drugs. Selig also said he might consider amending the record book to acknowledge steroids use by players.

Selig said he would look into the possibility of reinstating Hank Aaron ? a personal friend ? as No. 1 on the all-time home run list and attach asterisks or some other note to the records of players involved in steroids use.

"Once you start tinkering, you can create more problems," Selig said, USA Today reported. "But I'm not dismissing it. I'm concerned. I'd like to get some more evidence."

I saw this. This is nothing more than grandstanding by Selig. The guys who took the test in '03 were promised by baseball and the players union, that the results would be anonymous, and that there would be no punishment. Selig is powerless here, but is trying to make it look like he has the situation under control. He doesn't, never has.

I think A-Rod's kinda getting the short end of the stick, which he does deserve since he cheated. He shouldn't face any punishment though unless the other 103 guys that also tested positive also get punished. I'm still not sure how to take A-Rod's statements though, I don't know if he's sincere or if it's just what his agent says will help his image.

Maybe Bud should look into every past and current player who ever took amphetamines as well. Hell, Mike Schmidt came out in an interview and said that he took some stuff during his career that would be considered cheating under today's rules. Is Bud gonna put an asterisk on Schmidt's numbers too?

Good call Rusty. This whole thing is a joke.

While we're at it rick, let's start removing guys who threw spitballs and admitted it too. Bye bye Gaylord Perry, Niekros, etc. The thing that kills me the most about this, is how long Selig, and everyone else in baseball, from the union, to the owners, the GMs, the managers, scouts, etc, let this go on, unchallenged. Everyone and their brother knew about the problem, but baseball turned a blind eye. Selig is as big a part of the problem as anyone, but he acts like he is above the fray. Its BS. There is a great column in this week's SI by Joe Podsnanski (sp?) about this, if you get a chance to read it.

Wasn't Hank Aaron using amphetamines when he broke the HR record? If we're putting an * on Bonds, Aaron probably get's one too.

The thing that kills me is that everyone, including most fans, is still letting it go unchallenged in football.

I'm not sure where you are coming from with the football comment. The NFL addressed steroids decades ago, and both the league and union have agreed to harsher penalties for users in recent years. It isn't perfect, and never will be, but the NFL addressed it when it was a minor issue, and didn't let it do near the damage to the sport that baseball did.
