The kids at the school know that he has done more for them & the school & more good then most of here posting have done combined.
The guy has done a ton for the university, yet the students(like many students look for a cause) chant his name AFTER they find out he harbored a pedophile for 9 years?

    Seems incredibly myopic.

That said, Joe Paterno has, for 50 years, represented the best in college sports. I have often said that if I had a son who was going to play football, I would have encouraged him to play at PSU under Paterno because of the standards of behavior and performance that he stood for. Because of that, I am hugely disappointed in his response - 10 years ago and today - to this situation.
With that said, he committed one mistake. It is a really huge mistake, but it is one in a lifetime of doing really wonderful things for young people. I don't forgive him that mistake: he will pay for it with his career and his legacy. But I have made mistakes in my lifetime. I made mistakes that cost young men their lives. I have made mistakes that cost my employers many, many dollars. I have made mistakes that have cost my children and my wife tremendous emotional pain. In balance, I have done, I hope, many kind, gentle, supportive, helpful, generous, and good things.
Joe Paterno has done much with his life that is good, kind, and wonderful. He screwed up, perhaps unforgivably, this one time. While he cannot be simply forgiven for this mistake, it also should not wipe out all the good that he has done.
The pervert, on the other hand, can roast over an open fire for all that I care.
Very well said, M. You've expressed my thoughts better than I could.

I agree with you up to a point. The mistake he made was major enough that it will overshadow the good things, rightfully so.

I think the students who are protesting are just mad because the football team might lose the game this weekend. They are showing a total lack of class and a lack of perspective.

I'm a little confused why everyone is focused on the 2002 incident. It was terrible, but the problem was begun much earlier.

Take yourself back to 1999. Jerry Sandusky, longtime heir apparent to Paterno, retires from the Penn State staff at the age of 55. It was very unexpected at the time. Now we find out:

1998 - There are allegations of sexual abuse against minors which the university investigates.
1999 - Sandusky retires. Does anyone think it was not a forced retirement because of the investigation at this point? Why was the whole thing dealt with in such a "brush under the rug" fashion? Why was the decision made to *not* pursue the matter criminally by the appropriate authorities.

Yet Sandusky was allowed to have access to the university and its facilities for years leading up to 2002. In light of the presumably forced retirement, the 2002 incident should have been a catalyst to strong action by the university - including an aggressive pursuit of criminal charges.

See NPR's report on the timeline, which only makes things look worse.

Someone said we don't need a mob mentality when angry at Paterno for basically looking the other way and choosing a friend over a child in need. But the real question comes down to this. Is it better to have a mob mentality over the internet and just express your feelings or have this........which is in support of Paterno.

It's classless and makes the university look as dumb as the Wallstreet Protesters pooping on cop cars and pissing in bank lobbies.

You're way off base on your stance in all of this. As for the administration, I can already hear the chants.. WE ARE..STATE PENN
At this point that statement is supposition. Per the GJ there are 4 different statements. The truth I am sure will be sorted out.

If you think that I am way off base...about what specifically b/c I have written a lot here about this? Have you even read my post. I don't think so.

Glad u r so sure of that. How will you & others feel if it came out otherwise?

The students feel as if a great injustice has been done. JoePa they feel was made a scapegoat. He has done 61 years of service tot he school. He built a 139,000 square foot library partly with his own money. Kids know that & remember that. The media seem bent on destroying his entire legacy over this. Hence some of them over turned a TV Van. Others were screaming at the CNN reporters to get out of town.

You didn't grow up there Vais. You didnt go to school so for you the issues are black & white but guess what...they are not.

On the flip side I have to agree that from a business perspective the school have to clear house right or wrong. Letting JoePa go was the right choice. 2 former PSU wrestlers NCAA AA Dave Joynert & Ira Lubert are on the BOT. Its vote was unanimous. I hate it but thats what one mistake can do when it is a very large mistake.
