Thread: Calling all computer nerds!

    Default Calling all computer nerds!

Here's the situation, my laptop has a dead battery and I am using the cord for it. It is an HP with Vista (if that matters). I get my email through yahoo. As of last night, every time I try to get to my mail, it sends a little message in a box that says OUT OF MEMORY AT LINE:1.

When I click "ok". It's like it doesn't acknowledge the click and I have to do the whole, control-alt-delete thing and shut it down and restart it.

I have not checked my mail from another computer. Is this my computer doing it or is it yahoo?

I would bet it's your computer, try checking it from another computer, or if you don't have one close by call one of your friends and give them your password and have them check it for you. If you can get on with another computer you know it's your computer.

HP computers are notorious for cheap @$$ batteries that degrade quickly. U will probably have to cough up another $89 for a new one.

    Too many unknowns.

Try clearing your cache. It might be a temporary work around.

    Google the problem and read.

Try various technical help forums such as: Home - Microsoft Answers

    Beware of diagnostic sites.

I was able to get on the mail from another computer. I cleared all sent, inbox and trash items. Still couldn't get on from mine. I don't know what a cache is. Could you explain how to clear it? I also got some IT guys from my mom's work looking into it. But like PM said, there might be too many unknowns. Just hoping to avoid taking it to someone and paying to get it fixed.

    Quinn,
This happened to my wife with her Toshiba. We just took the battery out and use it with the cord. She has done this for 2 years now. You could also download CCleaner from download.com and run it at least once a week.
BRUTUS BUCKEYE WILL TAKE YOU DOWN...

    What browser are you using?

Your Cache/Cookies/History can all be found under the tools menu. You basically want to clear your browsing history. I'd clear it all, except for any saved passwords/form data.

The IT guys told me to download a free microsoft safety scanner. I did. I ran the scan and got no viruses. I also ran my Mcaffee scan. No viruses. Yet, I still keep getting the message. Are you saying that taking out the battery helps? We still have the battery in, it just doesn't work.

I guess I will try clearing my browsing history too. Thanks for the advice guys. Let's hope it works!

Okay!! Let's chalk this up to "Not enough information". As I was typing my last reply I noticed Snakem's question about what browser I was using. It was internet explorer. So, I downloaded firefox and tried it there. IT WORKS!! I don't have any idea why.

Anyone know why that would be? Is it the cache/cookie thing that I need to clear?
