Cool. With snow on the ground... maybe that was the winter after I was there in the summer. The blue car in my first picture was taken in Leningrad. The one with the white car was in Odessa, and I don't remember where the one taken above the road was. Moscow, I think.

In this picture you just posted, I see in the description that the model is called "samara" -- it seems weird that "samara" is printed on the side of the car but it's not in Russian writing?? Why would they have done that?

I'm actually digging the utilitarian aspect of a cheap 4x4 car. At least I'm assuming that's what the 4x4 means.

I had to laugh that the major differences in the cars were the lights. But, I do know car nuts who can tell the year of some American models by little things like tail lights.

I'll grant Big that most of what Japan and the U.S. put out in the 80's was pretty ugly by any standard. Those Soviet cars look like little Volvo's from the 80's.
