Default N.Y.-Charlotte US Airways flight crashes into Hudson

Passengers stand on the wings of a US Airways jet after the pilot ditched the plane in the Hudson River shortly after taking off from Laguardia Airport in New York City Jan. 15, 2009. All 155 passengers and crew were rescued, with only a few minor injuries.

2 of my friends were on that plane! They were able to use a cell phone that was getting passed around while they were still on the plane, to call their mother to let her know they were okay, and she sent an email out to all their friends last night to tell us about it.

They are saying that the pilot is a hero for being able to avoid a real disaster.

He brought the plane down into the Hudson around 46th Street which is midtown and around the cruise ship piers. If you look at a NYC map, Laguardia is in Queens and on the other side of Manhattan. He kept that baby in the air over the Bronz. Unlike the LI Sound, there are passenger ferries between NYC and NJ that run just south of where the plane went in. The folks on the plane were lucky in that all of the ferries were operating and were able to get to the plane within minutes, all designed under the Port Authority Emergency Management Plan.

Two engines on fire, loss of power, skyscrapers all over, 20F air, 40F water.

Miraculous. There's something to be said of aircraft design these days. You'll note that plane floated enabling the rescue and structurally it maintained its integrity though going in tail end first thanks to the captain. Shred the tail and that plane is underwater in less than a minute.

By the way, that flock of geese were up at about 2000 feet when they collided. The accident could have happened at just about any airport on the east coast. They were lucky there was water around for the landing. At 95% of the other airports, the ending would have been entirely different.

The engines ripped off on impact. That definately contributed to buoyancy.
