Default And a Happy Birthday To.......

.....SPUTNIK.....The old boy, son of Tinman is 50 years old today.

I can still remember going to my backyard around 9 PM to watch is cross the sky. Yes, you could see it in orbit.

The celebration would have been the equivalent of a Red Day parade back in the old Moscow, eh Big.

I may be a little biased but I think it was one of the most amazing things mankind has ever accomplished.

    Did you know:
Sputnik was the first man-made object to leave Earth's atmosphere, and the first aircraft to violate US airspace.
You do the math..... I'll do the alfredo!! HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!

I remember the neighbors were curious if it was a "Fat Boy". Until it was launched, the US government (so they say) didn't know Russia had the cabability, so when it hit the news, it caused a lot of concern.

    (Big must be out celebrating)

This was surely a great day for Soviet people. Atheist Commie bastards developed a satellite ahead of all religious capitalists. What a shock it was.

By the way, under no circumstance did Soviet government ever even thought of bombing any country with nuclear weapons unprovoked. It was all Western lies and propaganda. America I am not so sure of. After all it did bomb Japan.

you still don't know for sure if you even have a nuclear weapon that works, we found out in WWII that ours did and have not had to prove it again.

we did use the bomb on japan,(twice) had we not, many more would have died...i feel for the citizens of nagasaki and hiroshima but their government put them in that position.

then again, japan never should have brought a knife to a gun fight...what were they thinking by striking pearl harbor that we were going to lay down and quit?

i am just as perplexed about our place in this world today as a world power as the next guy and not quite sure how we are going to get out of the Iraq war without some additional pain but I have no qualms with the way that the war against the Japanese was fought in WWI...

you have to love the democracy of the soviet union where when the president of the country doesn't agree with term limits he simply becomes prime minister, gains control back of the country in that role and then goes back to being president in 2012...i am actually a bit of a Putin fan but that has the world raising its collective eyebrow

I'm going to say this one time...

There is a politics and religion forum for a reason, specifically for discussion that looks like it may start brewing in this thread after the last couple posts.

Please don't make me put the Admin hat on.

In terms of the actual thread, I agree with ISU, Sputnik was an amazing achievement, it set the building blocks of what mankind could do, and those blocks are still being redefined to this day.
