I heard a news report that said that a surprisingly high number of people survive airplane crashes (I don't remember, but I think it was over 90%), and I know that mile for mile, air travel is safer than driving. Consider that almost all air traffic involves professional pilots and better maintained vehicles, as opposed to the wackos on the roads. The reason your car seems safer is because you have no control in an airplane and you feel that you can avoid an accident in your car.

I've racked up over 1M miles in the air and I still hate flying. Stats say take-off and landing are the most risky but my fears are the bumps and grinds at 35,000 feet. It dates back 30+ years when the jet dropped over 100 feet flying over the Colorado Rockies in a storm and then 2 weeks later dropping a mere 25 feet coming over Mt Nittany landing in State College. That one bounced the attendent off the ceiling of the plane and onto the arm of an empty seat. They had to carry her out of the plane. Now, every time the plane hiccups I white knuckle my armrests.
Life's not the breaths you take, the breathing in and out that gets you through the day ain't what it's all about. It's the moments that take your breath away.

My older son is scheduled to take off from the Denver airport tomorrow morning. Provided he can get to the airport, which he couldn't two years ago.
