I'm eager to see if Belichik accepts responsibilty or if he claims he didn't know it is going on of that it wasn't against the rules.
I saw a statement from Belicheck last night, in which he essentially said there was a misunderstanding as to the rules; in other words, he thought what they were doing was within the rules but the NFL disagreed.
I don't exactly have a soft spot for the Pats but I do remember when they were a force in the old AFL, and their old uniforms were a lot nicer.
Does using a video camera provide any real advantage that binoculars and lip-readers (that all the other teams use) doesn't?
Sure, you can save the tape for playoffs or future games (when playing divisional opponents), you can review first half tape at halftime. The Chicago Bulls had a system (or at least they did when I interned for them) that all of their game video was digital. If a coach wanted to review a portion of tape from the first half, they would take out a Palm Pilot (this was in 2001), write down the time in the game, and then send the time wirelessly to the video coordinator. The videos that the coach wanted to see were then cued up for when the team came in at the half. The Pats probably have the same system; they could have been using this illegal video in their halftime discussion.
I think that the biggest loser in all of this are the Fighting Pigs and the Nachos of Death, my 2 fantasy football teams who had Thomas Jones as a running back. Sigh.
I just saw Belichick's most recent press conference on the news. When asked about the event, he kept repeating (I'm paraphrasing because I don't rememeber his exact words), "It's in the past, we're looking ahead to San Diego, it's over, it's history, it already happened." No explanations, no excuses, no nothing. He's a coward who won't even face up to what he did.
It's pure cryptology. You tape for a half, compare signals to results during the 3rd quarter and you are likely to crack the signal system in time for the 4th quarter when it counts. It'll be a heck of a lot easier to crack than Enigma.

Don't most teams change their signals during the game?

I've been a Patriots fan ever since I was a kid and they were the Boston Patriots.
Crap, I remember that. My first exposure (right around the time you hit 40) was 1968. I listened a lot to the radio, and read the sports page everyday (I was eight and a bit of a strange child), and heard nothing but positive things. They would do well during the exhibition season too. Then the season would start and they would get crushed. Nonetheless, I have always had a soft spot for the Patriots.
Brother Spider,
I remember the old Boston Patriots too. I loved their helmets with the Old Colonial guy hiking the ball! Sam(Bam!) Cunningham was one of my favorite players!
