Thank you for info. I understand Sprint is about to deliver 4g. I don't know when but it seemed before 2010. Anyway, I'm a AT&T customer now and so when 4g rolls out what does that mean to current 3g users, specifically iPhone users? Will it be a software upgrade or will it require new hardware, ergo a new iPhone?

I have read a few white papers on the ability of current 3g devices to work in the as yet undeployed LTE 4g enviornment. Most are saying both the AT&T and T-Mobil 3G HSPA devices will be just fine but they will not work at near the speeds of LTE 4G devices. Verizon and Sprint are using a 3G EV-DO platform that will also migrate to the new standard LTE 4G platform with the same outlook for their 3G devices.
As the I-phone will in all likelihood be the dominate device in the near term for the 4G world you can look for them to push a 4G model rather then offer upgrades on 3G models IMO.

New hardware. At&t will be deploying LTE at the newly cleared 700 MHz spectrum(Feb 09'). (I believe Verizon will utilize their 700 MHz spectrum in the same manner.)

Currently there are very few manufacturers of LTE equipment(really in it's infancy) Kind of a chicken and egg concept.

To say Verizon is in the process of a system wide roll out is a stretch. I sure they are in there planning stages just like At&t. Verizon has some pressing issues in front of them including there pending merger with Altell.

Aren't both providers adding G-4 as an overlay allowing existing devices to continue to operate? I have been on the FIOS side of the business since its roll-out so the wireless side of the business is not my field of expertise but from everything that I have read the existing architecture should remain in place for quite some time after G-4 deploys.

Since they operate at a seperate frequency LTE being set for the 700 Mhz spectrum. Old phones(2G, 2.5G, 3G) will continue to operate. I'm sure manufacturers will build phones that are muti-mode(technology) and multi-band(frequency). In order to take advantage of LTE or 4G you will need new equipment.
