Everest aint sh*t

sgallan posted this over on the other board, its a fantastic article detailing the history about K2.
K2 is summed up pretty well early on in the article, this year 262 people made it to the top of Everest. For the second year in a row no one made it to the top of K2. This is a BAD place.

It was supposed to be for two weeks, so I'm only technically on the hook for another couple days, but whatever.

Re: Everest aint sh*t
That article was from 2003. In 2004 50 climbers made the top, the most ever in a season. This year 17 climbers summitted on July 20th after fighting through 130mph winds half way up.. The total now stands at 270 successful summits( this includes thoses that died on decent).
K2 is the most brutal of the 8,000 meter peaks.

Found this article that you posted in the other thread too. That is a BAD looking Mountain, I had never really heard of it until I picked up and then blasted through "Into Thin Air" by Jon Krakauer which I'm sure you've read. Meaning to read "Eiger Dreams" and "Into the Wild" (which is actually coming out as a movie soon) soon.

Re: Everest aint sh*t
FWIW, I am rumanging around a longterm idea in my head. My kid is 12 now. As I would never consider such a mountain as K2 as a single father, I have a number of years to develop some mountaineering skills - and to see if I could actually have the wherewithall and natural ability to do something like K2 without putting a team at risk. I don't care about the dying part of it (it comes with the territory) as long as I am not reckless or putting others at an unnecessary risk.
Hardcore - What is the age limit for attempting such a mountain?

The oldest person to succeed was 65 years old. You still have plenty of time left. If you are serious about this get your rock climbing and self rescue skills up to speed. Next do as much winter climbing in the Cascades as you can and then hit the big Canadian climbs starting with Slesse and moving up to Logan. If you can pull those off then its on to Denali. Succeed there and you have enough of a resume that you might be considered as a team member for a K2 expedition. I say might because most leaders will want all team members to have at least 2 or 3 of the 8,000 meter peaks under their belt first but their have been exceptions to the rule. As you progress networking becomes key. There are many that would like to try but only a hundred or so a year can even get the permits and a spot on an expedition team.
If you are going to dream, dream big! If you get to the point of the Canadian climbs I stil have contacts to help you out there.
