    Default Getting back into shape...

Ok, so about 3 times this year, I've started working out, and then after about 2 weeks, I just quit because I find I have no motivation. Back when I was wrestling, I had to be in shape or I would get beat up on in front of large amounts of people. Now, if I'm not in shape, I just go to work and am like the majority of the general population. I've always said that the only way that I could get back into shape would be to either a)get back into competitive sports, which isn't going to happen, I'm not crazy enough to do MMA, or b)make a bet with someone that had a consequence that actually meant something to me.

So, obviously option B is the only thing that will ever get me off of my butt. In order for me to bet something with any one person, I'd have to bet like 5k or some meaningful amount of money. I'm pretty sure I don't know anyone that would do that with me, so I'm going to have to make a smaller bet with a bunch of people.

First, I need to think of some kind of measurement of me being "in shape". I want my time frame to be the next 4 months, i.e. until the end of winter vacation. I was thinking something like "Run a mile in x amount of time", bench x pounds, or some combination of both, but where 'x' would be a little more attainable in each case. FWIW, I probably can't even run a mile in 9 minutes now and I probably can't bench 225. So I pretty much am hoping you guys can give me some ideas on this one.

Once I have 2 or 3 good ideas, I'm going to send out a myspace bulletin (gay, I know, but only way I know how to get a lot of people in on the action)asking what "challenge" people would like to see me complete. I'll leave the "voting" open for 3 days or so, and whichever has the most votes is what I will do.

For everyone that votes (either for the winning thing or just votes in general, not sure what I want to do yet), if I don't meet the challenge by the end of the year, I'll have to treat them to a night on the town, i.e. go out and pay for all of their drinks one night. If I have a lot of people respond, then this money would definitely add up, and would be something that I would rather not do. If I do reach the goal, then I just don't have to do it, and I'm in good shape and not a turd like I am now. I'm obviously willing to other "bet" ideas, this was just the first thing I could think of.

So, any ideas for how to measure my in-shape-ness? Oh, and you guys can all be in the action too, with my potential night on the town to be paid at NCAAs.

I hope nobody answers you because a) you stole my thunder, and b)you didn't even answer the question of the guy whose thunder you are stealing.

homer....lets run a 5K when I come out in October. I too have been in the "time to get in shape again" boat for a while. I ran close to 4 miles the other day and thought my heart was going to explode....and i almost dueced myself. Pathetic.

I guess my challenge to you is run a 5k in under 21 min. You're "in shape" if you can do that. If not....take Twinkie's mentality, "Round is a shape".

We'll celebrate with rounds of pwnage afterwards.

I couldn't have ran a 5k in under 21 minutes even when I was back in college. I think the fastest single mile I ever ran was 5:30ish, and any subsequent miles would have been big dropoffs from that. I'm up for doing a 5k when you come out though. Assuming there is one around that time.

Grips, you messed up the quote (not surprisingly, that seems to be your thing) ... to get the full realization of "shape," here is the proper quote.

"I'm in shape ... round is a shape."

How do you intend to get in shape? That might determine what is in shape. I could never run a 5K in under 21:00 either, but mostly because my knees randomly dislocate when I run. So, I bike, and spin, and lift weights. I knew I was in shape when I could keep up with my entire spin class, or bike 50 miles. You could also take a body fat percentage measurement, and try to get it below a certain point.

Dart - you could quit drinking :P

I agree with Blue, you need to decide what exactly your trying to measure. Such as get back to benching as much as you did in college, or running a certain distance in a given period of time.

Either way if it gets you motivated... all I can say is good luck!
