Electric!! What Happens To Seized Guns, Drugs?

Police officers and sheriff's deputies bust people with illegal drugs and illegal weapons every day. Good Question: What Happens To Seized Guns, Drugs?

Sheriff's department used to sell guns at auction years and years ago. There were some really good deals available. Unfortunately, the press got ahold of the story and the Sheriff stopped. Responsible owners lose a good deal, loss of income to the county, and perfectly good tools are now destroyed.

The police steal most of the drugs and resell them or use them -if not the police then someone with access to the contriband /evidence room cause a whole lotta cases get thrown out for lack of evidence .
If you were a control officer making $8.00 an hour and had 5 kilos fall in your lap what would you do ?

They go back out on the street to establish credibility for undercover officers.

I can say that I've seen, on many occasions, pot plants burned upon seizure. They simply destroy them, which is what they do with other drugs, I have to assume.

Now, in terms of a seized gun, I say to just junk it. Once it seizes up, you can't shoot it anymore!

My older brother got popped for growing weed in 1994-the case was thrown out because the evidence disappeared -he did lose everything because the feds 'taxed' him for unearned income -and even though he was found not guilty he still lost his farm because he couldn't pay the taxes on something that disappeared-I'll callmy brother and see what he says about me giving you the case # and stuff if you want to look it up.

Since most seizures are headed to court we booked it into evidence. Once the case is adjudicated we'd get authorization from the DA's office to destroy it. Dope would get cremated either professionally or by some people in the department. Weapons were cut in half and dumped in the ocean about a mile outside the Golden Gate Bridge.

If I confiscated a weapon without arresting someone, then it could be destroyed after something like 30 days, dope too. I rarely arrested for weed, but would give them a choice: either crush it under their foot on the sidewalk or be arrested. It was always humorous to watch the expression on the faces of one or two guys as they pulverized their buds. I never had anyone choose arrest; so much for weed loyalty. Most of them were relieved to get away with a warning rather than being upset with losing their weed.
