Frank Garren is tough guy. The 6-foot, 4-inch former Army sergeant was awarded a Purple Heart after surviving a roadside bomb while deployed in Iraq in 2004. He knows about combat and quick reactions.

An angry squirrel is another matter, said Garren, who reported just such a run-in recently in Washington Park.

Two thoughts here - first, be careful what you say when speaking a language you don't understand; second, this was done to impress his girlfriend, who rolled on the ground laughing?

Gots to agree with quick_single, a plain idiot or on roids.

I just fail to see the correlation between loving his teammates like brothers and lopping his pinky off. It sounds like he had it chopped off as a way to prove something to them. You know behind his back they are laughing saying, "Man what an idiot!" despite what they might say to his face.

He may or may not be a bozo (his words suggest the former more than the latter), but my point is that you can injure your fingers, especially your pinkies, bad enough that surgery may not be the best option.

And his doctors said they might have had to amputate it regardless.

Oh I completely agree. His reasons are moronic though.

I don't get how this proves his love for his team / teammates. I'm guessing because he would still be able to play? But, wouldn't he be able to play even if they surgically repaired the finger? He'd probably be in a cast ... but he's a guard not a QB/RB/WR - besides he could still hold with the other hand

his Senior year and would have cost him the season -he might not play again -so he had it cut off to play this year-the first time Mesa has had a chance to win Div 2.
