GM, Chrysler hold merger discussions
Personally, I don't think they will unite. Chrysler's been down this road before.
How about Buffet Motors ? Or even Buffet Electric ? Or maybe Buffet, Goldman & Sachs.
Before we dig ourselves out of this hole, we may be seeing some big time mergers.
Life's not the breaths you take, the breathing in and out that gets you through the day ain't what it's all about. It's the moments that take your breath away.

Sounds like Studebaker-Packard all over again*... or, Sears and KMart coming together. In other words, two weakened partners coming together perhaps out of "necessity" but not really making much together.
Then again, maybe it'll be DaimlerChrysler all over again. At first, that merger seemed to make zero sense... then we saw how both sides of the Atlantic benefitted (Chrysler got Mercedes' engineering leadership in safety and in rear-wheel-drive technology that led to exciting products such as the Chrysler 300/Dodge Charger/Dodge Challenger... while Mercedes got a cheaper source for many components, such as six-speed automatic transmissions made in Chrysler plants in Kokomo, Indiana). But that marriage came apart...

* 50 years ago, there were two legendary US car companies: Studebaker, which was a smallish middle-class brand trying to compete with the Big Three (GM, Ford and Chrysler)... and Packard, a luxury brand that had a reputation that surpassed Cadillac or Lincoln. They came together as two money-losing businesses, and within five years or so, the combined company was gone.

My first car was AMC (Javelin). Not sure how old AMC was or who swallowed them up.

Re: Hmmm General Chrysler or Chrysler Motors ?
I wonder if Ford will void the Cummins contract with Dodge if this happens?

Re: Hmmm General Chrysler or Chrysler Motors ?
It wouldn't be practical to ban the import of foreign automobiles, but what do you think would result if such a move actually happened?

Re: Hmmm General Chrysler or Chrysler Motors ?
That is a ridiculously hard question -what constitutes ''Foreign''-I have more friends working for Subaru than Ford -not to mention Ford just signed a deal with Mexico to begin car production there rather than re-open any factories in Detroit -and as the good rev pointed out above the old delco plants are producing transmissions for Chrysler/mercedes /BMW . Here in Hoosierland we owe more jobs to subaru and Germany than anyone else . Who won WW2 again-the point seems very unclear now.

Excellent point. I can't think of a single auto in which all of it's parts and assembly production is in one country. Heck, even Harley Davidson is making a motorcycle with mostly German parts these days.
I've got an "American Made" type buddy who questioned my purchase of a Honda a few years ago. I told him to check the source of his Ford and sure enough it was assembled in Mexico, while my Honda was assembled about 20 minutes from my house in Marysville, OH. Plus, my Honda gets better gas mileage, requires less maintenance, and looks better to boot.
