Thread: high school reunion etiquette

    Default high school reunion etiquette

I have my 20yr. class reunion coming up in July. I was wondering what the etiquette is when you either remember a face but not a name or just don't recognize a person altogether. I've been reviewing my yearbook to "study-up" but I doubt the guys are still going have their mullets. Mine tragically died years ago, too. I have also heard that it is at your 20th year reunion that the cheerleaders look fat and ugly and the "high school nobodies" are the hotties.

Personally I wouldn't be offended if someone didn't recognize me, but everyone is different. So, when someone walks up and says hi and knows my name, but I can't remember theirs, what do I do? Should I just say what's up and not throw out a name? Should I take my best shot at the name I think it might be? Or do I ask them who they are?

Oh, and ours is being held in a barn/party room thing. It has been fixed up to be pretty nice, but it is still just the old Theobald farm. So, am I to dress up, kaki casual or camo shorts and ball cap and half drunk? Actually, the last option is probably how they would remember me from high school, so..... Any advice would be appreciated.

Name tags would be a good idea, but I've never actually been to any of my HS reunions, so I don't know. How big was your class?

Also, avoid the urge to point and laugh. That would be rude.

I went to my 20th and 40th. To keep the streak going, I'll probably also attend my 60th. We had name-tags at both, but everyone's in the same boat regarding changed appearances and dimmed memories, so don't worry about it. Usually, someone will approach you and introduce themselves.

If there's no suggested dress code in the invitation, I'd dress neatly, but not too dressy. Maybe chinos and a sport shirt. If you're still buff, wear a sleeveless muscle shirt (just kidding - unless you're really buff).

It's often true that the outsiders (like myself) became the over achievers (maybe because we had to work hard to prove ourselves) and the in-crowd became less successful (maybe because things came easy to them in high school and they were used to getting what they wanted without working for it). Just an arachnoid sociological theory.

At my 40th, I met the guy who got me started playing sports and to whom I owe all the benefits that wrestling has provided for me (he wasn't at the 20th). We rekindled our friendship after 40 years of no contact and now we get together every few months, talk frequently, and are close friends.

Also, some of the formerly hot girls are indeed fat and ugly (guys, too - and bald), but some of them are hotter than ever. Enjoy the view.

I have absolutely NO IDEA what chinos are. Maybe it's an age thing or maybe I'm just too "hick", but are those like kaki's?

As far as class size, we were pretty small 120-130. We all pretty much got along in hs, but there were clicks like any hs. I think I would recognize any athlete or any of the guys who "hunted" early in the mornings before school. Really we were just going to a tree house in the woods before school and getting loaded on the beer an older friend had left for us. Oddly enough, no one even questioned why 4-5 teenage boys were walking alongside the road at 4am on a Tuesday morning with shotguns or bows in our hands. But the girls I thought were decent looking, but in the wrong clicks, are probably hot now-a-days. I am married and my wife will be with me, but I don't want to come off as an ass for forgetting a name. I didn't think about name tags, but I hope you all are right and they have them.

I like you Spider, but you are going to have to explain chinos to me. I hope they aren't like gauchos that my sisters used to wear in the 70s, because I ain't getting into those for any reason!

Yes, they're khakis. I don't know if chinos is a regional term, but probably it's an outdated term (like I still call jeans dungarees).

No, wait, it's still currently used:

Regarding the link that I gave you, I wouldn't suggest the red ones.

Thanks for the clarification. I've never heard that term, but I own a couple of pairs. We just call them kakis or church pants.

My 20 year HS reunion is this year too, but for some ridiculous reason it is being held on Thanksgiving weekend. They did the same thing for the 10 year. I didn't attend that one and won't attend this one either. Hello! Football season! Wrestling season! Oh well.

That's because people who live out of town are usually back in their hometown that weekend visiting their parents.
