Thread: Stupidity & Arrogance

I don't know if anyone else saw the the show that Bryant Gumbel hosts on HBO this week, but they did an expose on the world of dog fighting. It's as bad as you can possibly imagine. The losing dogs are usually killed off, and instead of shooting them, the sadistic owners usually do something cruel to them. One genius hooked up electrical connections to each ear of the dog, and then electrocuted him. Vick (or his buddies) are alleged to have done the same thing to dogs.

They also talked about a case where a normal dog was stolen from his yard, and then thrown into the ring against a real killer dog, as fresh meat. In order to make it even more gruesome, they broke the dog's hip prior to throwing him into the ring, so that he wouldn't be able to fight back effectively. Somehow, the dog survived and dragged himself back to his own yard. The owner got him to the vet, and the dog survived, although he will always have problems walking.

One of the fans of dogfighting said that it's just like football - it's a brutal game and only the strong survive. Uh, no. Football players choose to participate in a relatively dangerous sport. They aren't thrown into a ring and made to fight for hours until their neck and/or organs are ripped open.

If karma exists, then there is a special place in hell for these sadistic freaks. It would be great if Vick could be introduced to the prison version of the rape stand soon. Put it on PPV.

Vick's lawyers reportedly tell him to accept deal
Quarterback reportedly would have to serve at least 1 year in prison
The lawyer spoke on condition of anonymity to The Associated Press because of the ongoing discussions.

Vick would serve one year or more in prison if he accepts a plea deal offered by federal prosecutors, the Virginian-Pilot reported.

Under the agreement, Vick would plead guilty felony conspiracy to travel in interstate commerce in aid of dogfighting and related gambling. He would face a maximum prison sentence of five years and a fine of $250,000, the newspaper said.

The sources also told the newspaper that the plea deal would call for sentencing guidelines of 12 to 18 months in prison. But it would be ultimately up to U.S. District Judge Henry E. Hudson.

I'm a little uncomfortable with how some of this has gone down. I'm a huge dog lover, and I think it's disgusting what happened, but let me put this in perspective for you.

Ray Lewis got like 15 days in jail and probation for essentially standing by and watching two men get stabbed to death by a couple of his friends. He came back, got his endorsements, and is enormously popular. Mike Vick is accused of dog fighting and the government is doing everything in their power to hang him high....So the example to be set is that: It's better to watch your friends kill a couple of guys then it is to run a dog fighting ring.

By law you are not entitled to defend a stranger. Using your own money to kill dogs is completely different.

Well, this touches on a couple of themes I've been harping on. Ugly will disagree with me, but I'm telling you all that the media's choice of what they cover, and how they cover it (rather than some intrinsic news value), has tremendous power in shaping how we view the world. In the Vick case, our little oligarchy of media corp's has chosen to push this story front and center. So anytime we turn on sports television, or pick up the sports page or, (because this is a negative story about a black man) listen to talk radio, we hear about Vick.

And, oh, the response. Big (as well as a few others I'm sure) wants to kill him. I suspect if we personally knew someone in our community who did the same, we would likely wonder more how this could have happened and less about how we could exact revenge. But when a story is framed and fueled by yellow journalism, we get a somewhat different response.

As to the comparison to the Ray Lewis story, there's some distinction I suppose in that Lewis participation in the wrongdoing was (as much as I know) passive whereas Vick's was (purportedly) active. We also have to consider the victims in the stories. Sadly, there are many people in this country who are more sympathetic to dead dogs, than they are to dead black men (can't you just hear all the suppositions as to why they were killed?).

Agree in full Vak, love dogs, think Vick is a scum bag, but perspective is always nice in situations like this.

The guy I always use as an example for this is Ram's D-end Leonard Little, drove drunk and killed a woman. Did 90 days and a bunch of community service. I've hardly met anyone who even knows about this.

Vick wasn't drunk when he decided to kill dogs.

Because he could not have been drunk continuously for many years. He had to be sober at least once while thinking what the hell am I doing killing dogs like that.
