Default 2010 FIFA World Cup Prediction Contest/Discussion

Biggest sporting event in the world gets started here in about a week and a half. Americans played their final domestic friendly yesterday (winning 2-1 over Turkey) and are now off to South Africa.

Here's how the groups stack up.

    Group A
    South Africa
    Mexico
    Uruguay
    France

    Group B
    Argentina
    Nigeria
    South Korea
    Greece

    Group C
    England
    United States
    Algeria
    Slovenia

    Group D
    Germany
    Australia
    Serbia
    Ghana

    Group E
    Netherlands
    Denmark
    Japan
    Cameroon

    Group F
    Italy
    Paraguay
    New Zealand
    Slovakia

    Group G ("Group of Death")
    Brazil
    North Korea
    Ivory Coast
    Portugal

    Group H
    Spain
    Switzerland
    Honduras
    Chile

Markedly better draw for the US this year unlike 06 when they had Italy, the Czechs, and Ghana so hopefully they'll be able to make a little bit of a run.

Go U.S. And A! We have a very favorable draw and I like us to advance out of group play and win a game or two.

In all likelihood we're going to have to if we want to stay away from a round of 16 match up with the Germans.

Without Michael Ballack, Ze Germans won't be quite as formidable but it'll be interesting to see if the team would be able to pull off a little revenge win from the quarters back in 02.

As a South Afican citizen with lots of friends and family there, I'm most interested in finding out how the infrastructure holds up, and weather tourists can be protected from the often rampant crime. This World Cup can be a huge thing for South Africa as long as it goes well, or a huge embarassment if they fail. I think it's about 50/50 right now, coudl go either way.

England lost their captain Rio Ferdinand to injury yesterday, they've been forced to call a back up in on short notice.

In other news Didier Drogba who plays striker for sleeper team Ivory Coast (probably better known by his club play for Chelsea) broke his elbow yesterday dealing them a major blow to their chances of possibly advancing out of their group of death with Brazil and Portugal.

With this still being a week out from getting going in an effort to kind of liven things up a little bit I'm starting a Picks Contest here in this thread. Winner can give the losers a sig for a few weeks.

    Pick...

The top two finishers in each group

    The top four finishers overall

The Golden Ball Winner (Most Outstanding Player)

The Golden Boot Winner (Most Goals Scored)
