Brilliant ending to a usually brilliant series. Excellent job by Lindelof and Cuse of closing things out.

    More thoughts later.

    Great ending.

The island was purgatory. They had to be stripped clean of the last stains of sin to be able to enter Heaven. This stripping away is painful but it is a purposeful pain, and good comes of it, like labor gives life. The people who died in the crash went to hell. They were the condemned.

I think they stated pretty conclusively that the island wasn't purgatory.

I don't have a transcript but I thought that Christian Shepherd made it pretty clear when he was talking to Jack in the church that what they went through on the island was real.

If anything was a limbo/purgatory situation it was the sideways that they entered into during this season and then "left" at the end after they had found one another.

Hopefully this will be addressed when Kimmel comes on in 10 minutes.

What about Walt and his dad?

How could people like Wittmore come and go to the island?

I still don't get all of it. These six seasons were like trying to understand the lyrics to American Pie. I needed someone smarter than me to explain it all.

Strictly speaking Purgatory is not a place, it is a state of being. People could come and go because, people spend different amounts of time in Purgatory. The Island was a place in Purgatory, an experience of Purgatory maybe would be better. The whole reality the people experienced was Purgatory. At the end Benjamin did not enter the Church he said he wasn't ready, his soul needed more cleansing. If the white light at the end was Heaven, there are only two ways to get there, directly at death (be a Saint) or via Purgatory (the way most of the human race will get there). It would be interesting to read Dante's Purgatorio. The writers seemed to have modeled the show on it to some extent.
