Police conducting a routine probation search of the house in Malibu, California, early yesterday said they found Redmond, 24, in possession of the drug.

Los Angeles County sheriff's department said another vial was found in his 67-year-old father's bedroom, prompting deputies to arrest both men.
They were held at the Malibu/Lost Hills police station.

The pair were later released on bail of $10,000 (?5,600).

Redmond, whose mother is Farrah Fawcett, the actress, was arrested last year on charges of carrying crystal meth and heroin while driving under the influence.

He pleaded not guilty to the charges but, as part of a deal to avoid going to prison, he was fined and placed on three years probation.

This was the reason for the deputies' 7am search of his home.

The family has a long history of drug problems. O'Neal's daughter, Tatum, was arrested in New York last July for possessing a bag of crack cocaine and another of ordinary cocaine.

In her memoir, A Paper Life, she told of a chaotic childhood in which her mother, Joanna Cook Moore, battled with drugs and drink, while her father was prone to abusive outbursts of anger.
