Default Ohio high school: Notre Dame recruit died in Fla.

CINCINNATI (AP) -- A star high school football player from Ohio who was recruited by Notre Dame died after falling from a hotel balcony while on spring break in Florida, a high school spokesman said.
Students at St. Xavier High School gathered on the football field Friday night to remember senior Matt James following reports of his death in Panama City Beach, Fla., spokesman Mark Motz said Saturday. James, 17, apparently died instantly after he fell from the third-floor balcony of the Days Inn Motel at around 6:30 p.m. Friday, police told WJHG-TV in Panama City.

Fell from the 5th floor and was drunk, leaning over the railing.

This is 2nd in the last 2 weeks. A Georgia recruit also fell over the rail back in March, also in Panama City.

James was part of a group of about 40 St. Xavier students and a half-dozen parents on the trip.

"Witnesses and friends indicate he had become drunk and belligerent," Humphreys said. "He had leaned over the balcony rail, was shaking his finger at the people in the next room over. He fell over."

Where were these parents that were on the trip? Why were they letting these kids get obnoxiously drunk?

So sad for a kid with such a bright future.

Pretty common Rick, the kids are in their rooms drinking while the parents are on the balcony gabbing away.

A young local girl took a header off a balcony at 3AM while in Hawaii for a cheerleading comp. The parents were in their rooms sleeping while the kids partied. They found her on the roof of the pavillion below when some of the others girls woke up and went outside. The estate sued the school and the parents for negligent supervision. She had .25 BOC. One of the girls was 18 and slipped out to take a cab to a local liquor store and found someone to buy for her.

Are the parents responsible in some way, I don't think so.

    Ummm, this happened at 6:30pm

So, I'm pretty sure the parents weren't sleeping while the kids snuck out for some booze.

I guess my parents instilled a different set of values. I can't imagine taking my kid and his friends on a trip and just ignoring them as they got drunk. Or as you so casually wrote, "the kids are in their rooms drinking while the parents are on the balcony gabbing away".

A parent needs to be a parent first and a friend second. Not the other way around.

    True indeed.

Maybe you misunderstood. It's pretty obvious the parents were not staying in the same rooms as the kids. Since isn't a school trip where everyone dines together. The kids are on their own. It's pretty common on these trips. Why are the parents there? I don't know, because they don't have any control.

That saddens and angers me......I mean, the kid has a future that 90% of kids his age would trade anything for, and he just throws it away....I am sick and tired of hearing about kids my age getting drunk/drinking. It is socially encouraged (at least from my experience), and kids just don't know how to say no to peer pressure. Sometimes, that all leads to such a tragic outcome as this.
