    Default Happy St Patrick's Day!

OK so it's a day early, but since I'll be on the way to Omaha tomorrow figured I'd go ahead and get it started with an Irish blessing ...

May the Irish hills caress you.
May her lakes and rivers bless you.
May the luck of the Irish enfold you.
May the blessings of Saint Patrick behold you.

along with a few of my favorite dance pics I've collected over the years...

the irish catholic toast i like to share:

when you drink, you get drunk
when you get drunk, you fall asleep
when you're asleep, surely you can commit no sin
when you commit no sin, you go to heaven
so let's all get drunk and go to heaven

Please tell me one of those heads isn't a stick on.
Life's not the breaths you take, the breathing in and out that gets you through the day ain't what it's all about. It's the moments that take your breath away.

Like some of you maybe many of you you have an Irish ancestor. My Paternal Grandmother, Beatrice McKinley.came over on the boat in 1916 when she was 2 years old from County Mayo. That of course made St Patrick's day a big deal in our family (especially growing up in NY where there SO MANY Irish), BUT I did not know why until a few years later. And while the whole world thinks of it as an excuse to drink, there is a real history behind the reason it is so celebrated.

Just thought I would share a little of that with you all this morning.

St Patricks Day - ABOUT SAINT PATRICK

Saint Patrick was the patron saint and national apostle of Ireland who is credited with bringing christianity to Ireland. Most of what is known about him comes from his two works, the Confessio, a spiritual autobiography, and his Epistola, a denunciation of British mistreatment of Irish christians. Saint Patrick described himself as a "most humble-minded man, pouring forth a continuous paean of thanks to his Maker for having chosen him as the instrument whereby multitudes who had worshipped idols and unclean things had become the people of God."

Saint Patrick's Day has come to be associated with everything Irish: anything green and gold, shamrocks and luck. Most importantly, to those who celebrate its intended meaning, St. Patrick's Day is a traditional day for spiritual renewal and offering prayers for missionaries worldwide.

So, why is it celebrated on March 17th? One theory is that that is the day that St. Patrick died. Since the holiday began in Ireland, it is believed that as the Irish spread out around the world, they took with them their history and celebrations. The biggest observance of all is, of course, in Ireland. With the exception of restaurants and pubs, almost all businesses close on March 17th. Being a religious holiday as well, many Irish attend mass, where March 17th is the traditional day for offering prayers for missionaries worldwide before the serious celebrating begins.
