If you had two bars one with the permit and one without which one would make more money?
Good question. Here's another: Which one would have a higher customer turnover rate?

I'm not sure that it takes a great genius to infer this, but my hunch is that dives will lose business, as they are usually filled with smokers. More "high brow" places, by contrast, will likely see an increase in business.

We banned it in Iowa this summer, and what I mentioned above is what they are starting to see, at least preliminarily.

You don't have a right to go "where ever".

You are talking about entering a privately owned business. The owner of that business can decide to let you in or not and to serve you or not. It is not your right to demand they serve you. (The only exceptions being denying service because of race or religion)

With that in mind, the owner should be able to serve the customers they choose to attract. If that business owner wants to cater to smokers then they should have that right.

I have the right to a smoke free environment in any establishment that is open to the public. Even a privately owned business has obligations to the public.

As I mentioned previously, I am glad for the ban but don't think the government should make that decision. On the other side of the coin, I know that some businesses whose patrons used to smoke are glad to see the ban. For example, a local bowling alley upgraded all its equipment now that they know it will not get ruined by smoke.

That is what I totally agree with. I think that with the government doing this it can and will lead to more and more regulations for individual businesses that should be left to the business owner.

Tell me about it, this morning, I woke up and I shit a squirrel, but what I can't get is the damn thing is still alive. So now, I've got a shit covered squirrel running around my office and I don't know what to name it.

Ah, the slippery slope argument. Don't let them do something good because next they might do something bad.

EXACTLY!!! I'm sure as a business owner you don't want the government to tell you how to run your business.

As a consumer, I realize that government must sometimes take steps to ensure that businesses treat me properly. I'm not in favor of lots of government intervention and I do value my autonomy as a business owner, but in this situation, I think my right to be safe and healthy in any place I choose to do business supercedes the owner's right to allow an unsafe condition to exist. That's pretty much the position I've tried to express over these 17 pages of debate, and I don't think either side has come any closer to being convinced by the other.
