For example, a bar owner declared his bar an amateur theater and his guests ? amateur actors acting scenes from the past when there was no non-smoking law in Bavaria. According to another Bavarian law (the fire safety law), in theaters, smoking is permitted in artistic performances if it is necessary for the story line. Now people go to this bar and play smokers in times gone by
Funny that you bring that up. Part of the musical Jersey Boys, which is in Chicago right now, calls for the actors to light up. The production company didn't get a variance for the law, and now the cigarettes are not part of the show. That hasn't stopped people from packing the theaters, or from the show getting huge critical acclaim.

What if the play calls for a character to be hanged? Does artistic integrity still supercede all? I can easily spot a fake hanging and I'm entitled to get the full effect of the play.

I'll say it again - the no-smoking law is one of the best things that the Illinois legislature passed as of late. I've yet to hear a smoker complain about it.

I'm not going to get involved with this debate, but as a former smoker of almost 25 years (I'm over 4 years smoke-free now), there is little happiness that us smokers get from it. At least for me, it was a life of hell, feeling like a slave to something that addictive.

Everybody know that life and liberty come before the pursuit of happiness, don't they?

Yes, you are! You can go there and play a non-smoker.
BTW, a lot of non-smokers visit that bar. They play non-smokers who don't mind smoking.

Just wondering...in reference to earlier posts about a tobacco permit.

If you had two bars one with the permit and one without which one would make more money?

It depends. And when you say 'make more money' are you talking revenue or profit?
