Default Hurricane Ike?

Anyone here affected by Hurricane Ike?

Seems like we're going to get it today in the Chicago area, and we've been getting the edge of the system's rain since Friday. We spent the day yesterday pumping our basement fire escape window well (it's extra deep). I'm not sure how much rain we got, the gauge only holds 5 inches, and it was full.

Blue, I'm sure you're glad you don't have a basement right now. Traffic was terrible yesterday, lots of closed roads, etc. DH, how's it by you?

I heard there were evacuations in the Albany Park area and Riverside was on watch.

My cousin moved to Houston a week ago Monday. Fortunately he was renting a house while looking to buy. Nice welcome.

Good time to look for a dry basement/hurricane-proof house though.

In Wichita we had over 8 inches of rain in 12 hours and has led to the worst flooding in 10 years. The worst part is we were getting rain all week long before the remnants of Ike got to us making the flooding that much worse.

Same here. I had 3 inches of rain in the gauge the other day, we were pretty saturated. My tomatoes in the garden look terrible, the leaves are rotting. Yesterday we had 5+ inches and today I'm at 2 1/4 inches already. It looks like it will be over in an hour or so. I live next to the North Shore Channel, which is basically flood control built 100 years ago. It was so high yesterday but flowing really fast. Last night I read that they opened up the lock north of us and let it flow into Lake Michigan. Good to see our flood control plan works.

This is an interesting entry about the Chicago Deep Tunnel Project, which was commissioned in the mid-70's and scheduled to be completed in 2019. My uncle was a project manager for the Lisle section(western suburb) of it in the 1980's, so I've been following it's progress for awhile.

Bonnie, it was the most rain Chicago has had in one day - ever. I am glad I don't have a basement right now because those evacuations are pretty close to where I live. The Chicago River is soooo high, and when I go to my parents' house in a few hours, I'll see what the Des Plaines is looking like. That always floods.

Update for Bonnie and anyone else who knows Chicago: the Des Plaines river was seriously flooded, so much that to get to my apartment on the north side from my parents' home in Melrose Park, I had to go south to the Eisenhower and take that over the Des Plaines, and then take Sacramento back north. Everything that can be flooded here IS flooded.

Clearwater KS 8 inches, ICT 10 inches, and that was w/o Ike, it went to the east of us. The most rain in the history of record keeping for a 24 hour period in Wichita. Are you at home? Bet you were flooded in if you were. I couldn't imagine this city in a hurricane zone. Re: Ike, have some friends in Houston who had some damage from trees in their yard. Others in Galviston who lost everything.
