American market beers do not vary significantly in their alcohol content. Most run very close to 4.5% alcohol (by volume). Content will vary by state. Many states mandate "3.2" beer, which is 3.2% by weight (percentage by weight is the ATFB required measurement.) That comes out to 4% by volume.
European beers vary significantly in alcohol. Most British beers come in around 4%, with the premium bitters and special bitters running up to 5%. German beers are typically stronger, with the southern beers usually starting at about 4% and running up from there. Watch out for German beers ending in "ator" (for example, the Fastenbier Optimator) which will run from 6.8% to 8.5%.
The Belgium Labics that my wife and daughters love run between 7.5% and 8%.
