I like te fact that Gerard Butler's Scottish accent is very thick at points in the movie. Odd for a Spartan don't ya think?

    Overall a very enjoyable movie.

Well obviously they're going to speak English seeing it's an American movie, but his accent gets very thick at some points. Not as thick in others.

The funny thing is that Sparta was the least Democratic of all the Greek states. The reason it was picked for this movie was because it was the strongest military state in Greece. There were Kings, there were oligarchs and there was hereditary transfer of power. Athens was the most Democratic state but the weakest militarily. Whatever limited Democracy Sparta had was limited to those that had military training.

So, in essence the movie doesn't hold water if you realize that the movie is advocating the least Democratic and the most military state as the model and a victor in the movie.

In antiquity Sparta was a Dorian Greek military state, originally centered in Laconia. As a city-state devoted to military training, Sparta possessed the most formidable army in the Greek world, and after achieving notable victories over the Athenian and Persian Empires, regarded itself as the natural protector of Greece.[1] Laconia or Lacedaemon (Λακεδαίμων) was the name of the wider city-state centered at the city of Sparta, though the name "Sparta" is now used for both. The Kings of Sparta were believed to be the direct descendants of Heracles.[2] Adolf Hitler, considered Sparta to be the first National Socialist state, and praised its early eugenics treatment of deformed children.[3]

Big this movie is a loose talling of the battle of thermopoley (sp). The movie makers did not just pick Sparta this is an actual historical event and could be considered a great military strategy that the Spartans implimented. Using the landscape to their advantage when they were outnumbered by thousands.
