It's also not out of the realm of possibility that the evil lord xenu took control of his mind and made him point his gun at the cops, but I'm more inclined to believe that it's a simple case of criminal making the stupid and fatal mistake of pointing a gun at some cops.

I know nothing of this NY case, but M Richardson's description is right on accurate. I personally know of an officer who took foot chase of a suspect who took foot bail from a car chase. The suspect ran through a residential neighborhood into a backyard enclosed with a six foot tall redwood fence. As the suspect ran toward the fence he pulled a gun and twisted clockwise with his right arm and fired two rounds. The officer returned fire. The officer's first round hit the suspect's right side slightly behind and below his arm pit. The force of the round twisted the suspect counter clockwise. The officer's second round struck the suspect in the back below the shoulder blade twisting him more counter clockwise. The officer's third round hit the suspect in the back to the left of the spine. The three shots cork screwed the suspect into the ground. He lived and is now in prison where he belongs. He got nothing in the civil case. This is real life. Happy Thanksgiving.

Actually, therick, when you make a ridiculous example using Xenu or whoever, you are also indirectly stating that cops planting evidence and covering up crimes is ridiculous as well.

I already said I didn't blame the cops in this situation.

G & P simply stated that things aren't always as cut-n-dry as they may appear in a newspaper story and gave a few brief explanations of why a suspect might have done something we consider foolish (running from the cops).

I still think he has a valid point.

Disagree all you want but G & P is not an idiot for remaning skeptical or simply pointing out other possibilities, which is what you seem to be saying in a very roundabout way.
Your ignorance is painful to witness.....

I didn't mean to infer that G&P is an idiot. I agree that it's possible that the cops could have manufactured evidence. I apologize for going over the top and using a fairy tale character in a failed attempt at humor. G&P's hypothesis certainly could be true.

I just have way to many cop friends and relatives and have done way too many ride alongs to give the benefit of the doubt to the criminals over the cops. My general inclination is to believe law enforcement over criminals until given a good reason to believe otherwise. In my experience it usually is as cut-n-dry as it appears in the story 99% of the time.

    Thanks for the clarification.

I am probably guilty of reading too much into your post.

Reason? I'm bored and I'm not looking forward to the Thanksgiving feast today.....turkey is overrated.

I do agree with everything in your last post, by the way.

I agree with Turkey being overrated. One of these days I'm going to start bow hunting and try to get a deer before Thanksgiving, so we can have a feast more like the actual original.

My point was actually to address why there is outrage by the community.

The people living there are reacting in a totally different way than many of us here would. Why is that? Are they all crazy? Are they not as smart as us? Are the racists? The one thing that seems obvious to me, is that they don't trust the cops.

The local police department in my town have been successfully sued for millions of dollars on various occasions in the past few years. They stole weapons from the evidence room, planted evidence, made death threats to local officials, etc. When I used to coach high school kids, they often told me about the cops roughing up kids. I personally know a few of them and I do NOT have a very high opinion of them. If this shooting scenario happened in my town, I would definitely be skeptical of their retelling of the what happened.

therick I'm just reading along and found your post curious. You say you generally believe cops over criminals. What was the criminals statement in this case, where you are choosing to believe the cops over him?
    Lets go Brent!
