Don't get me wrong -- I enjoyed the movie. Killer soundtrack, Matt Modine, Madonna, Forrest Whitaker, Linda Fiorentino, Ronny Cox, Daphne Zuniga... and the guy who played Shute... good, good, good...
... but, as appealing as this movie is, IT'S NOT THE BOOK!
A movie that follows more closely follows the plot and spirit of the book would make a very good film IMHO.

Mark | It would also help to fix the wrestling sequence at the end -where the ref says "No takedown" as they go out of bounds, yet restarts them with Louden in the down position, then Shute breaks him down and the announcer calls out "Takedown - 2 points for Shute".

Mark | I feel the same way about 'The world according to Garp'-just can't catch all John Irving's nuances in a movie -and please remake it w/out robin williams .

So if the movie remake were true to the book...
But I agree. The match in the mid 1980s movie could use some fixing...

Mark | Yes, and that's one reason why I found the book much superior to the movie. The final scene is Louden skipping rope warming up for the match, and it ends with him running out onto the mat. The point, of course, is that it isn't about the result, it's about the quest. Also, in the book Carla wasn't all that good looking. It's too bad they needed a Hollywood ending for the movie, but I can't criticize Carla's upgrade.

I have never read it and would like to.

I have never read it and would like to. | I was thinking the same thing Pimach ... book > movie every time, probably in part because when you read a book, you picture your own movie in your mind's eye - and the movie that is actually made is someone else's interpretation/vision of the movie and not yours. Plus they can almost never portray everything from a book in the time allotted for a typical movie (and then there's the whole Hollywood formula thing, etc.).
I'm sure you can find the book somewhere, even if out of print. I'm going to take a look for it now myself.
Also, a little off topic here, but I happened to just watch Vision Quest a couple nights ago ... Was it common in the 80s for takedowns to be primarily headlocks, throws, or trips? I don't remember seeing hardly any shots taken in the wrestling sequences. So, I was wondering if that was an accurate depiction of the era or another time where a movie was a bit off in representing a particular sport.

I once watched the miniseries "the Stand" and wanted to read the book, so I ran out, got it and was like 'WTF" the book was damn good and the movie sucked in comparison, so much was left out.
I'm going to look for the book too, probably on amazon. | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
