Stanford Maintains Top Spot in the First Spring Division I Learfield
Sports Directors’ Cup Standings


Cleveland, Ohio – With three top-10 finishes in the most recent spring championships, Stanford has extended its lead in the first spring Division I Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup Standings. The Cardinal now have a total of 1258.75 points after notching a third place finish in the national
collegiate women’s water polo championship and a ninth place finish in both women’s and men’s tennis. Stanford also placed 40th in women’s golf this spring.

Moving up one spot into second place is North Carolina with 1062.75 total points. The Tar Heels finished in the top-25 in five of the seven spring championships completed. North Carolina finished second in women’s lacrosse, fifth in men’s lacrosse, seventh in women’s golf and 17th in
both women’s and men’s tennis.


Jumping 14 spots and back into the top-five is Southern California. The Trojans have earned 395 points this spring, the most of any institution. Southern California captured the men’s tennis championship, placed second in both men’s volleyball and women’s water polo, finished third in
women’s golf and 17th in women’s tennis for 897 total points.

Holding onto fourth place is Michigan with 884.80 total points. The Wolverines notched a fifth place showing at the women’s water polo championship, placed 17th in both women’s and men’s tennis and 49th in women’s golf.

California climbs two spots to complete the top-five. The Golden Bears finished second in women’s tennis, 25th in women’s golf and 33rd in men’s tennis for 849 total points.

Institutions capturing spring NCAA championships include: Arizona State (women’s golf); Northwestern (women’s lacrosse); Syracuse (men’s lacrosse); Duke (women’s tennis); Southern California (men’s tennis); UC Irvine (men’s volleyball); and UCLA (women’s water polo).

The Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today. Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in up to 20 sports -- 10 women’s and 10 men’s.

The next spring Division I standings will be released June 19, 2009 at the 44th Annual NACDA Convention.
