Re: MMA vs WWE: Which Is Better For Amateur Wrestling?
i think the whole wwe thing gets kids, who are not at all educated about wrestling, into the sport. because they hear wrestling, and because they are so into wwe, alot of them join high school wrestling for that reason. when it comes to mma, alot of guys who are interested in it want to get right into it. we as wrestlers know that if your wrestling background is strong, mma can be easier. but alot of the guys who get interested in mma dont know that, so they go and train jiu jitsu or something of that nature instead of wrestling. so i think wwe gets more people to join, while former wrestlers are leaning more towards mma these days. i see both as positive for the sport though.

So I see the lure of MMA and big money pulling kids away from wrestling and college.
Summer wrestling numbers are way down, summer camp numbers are down.

If the kids found something that interests them more than wrestling, then let them pursue it. Kids shouldn't be forced to train all season in one particular thing, it causes burn out.
MMA training is much more fun than training in wrestling. Heck, taking a break from wrestling might clear their heads a bit and when they come back for the season, they will be itching to go.
And if they don't because they like MMA better than wrestling, then let them pursue what makes them happy. There is a lot of pressure to train year-round in wrestling, and often it causes burnout and a love-hate relationship with the sport. I have experienced that first hand, and moving on from wrestling to training in submission grappling and MMA is the best decision I have ever made.

I can't vote, but I can say this. I have a lot of former student/wrestlers and they all wanna join mma now. I always tell them to go to college or get some form of certificate before you actually compete. Training is ok, but if you really want to do it - use wrestling to have a successful college career and further your education.
The problem is that a few kids that have college potential will try mma before stepping on a collegiate mat? I disagree with that because in the long run a degree will be a strong factor in how you live your life.
Any full contact sport could severly injure any athlete, I would hate for someone to jump into the sport and get hurt.............. then they don't have many options on a career and once you get paid to compete you can't compete in collegiate sports. (I heard that JUCO and some other classes do allow it, so correct me if I'm wrong)

There you have it. Thanks Dlareg.

Unfortunately, a degree means way less than it did 20 years ago. I'm almost 10 years out of college, and I find very little value in my degree these days. I often think that if I had concentrated on my current profession (in the IT industry) straight out of high school, instead of taking a bunch of useless classes that were taught by professional professors, I would be way ahead of where I am right now.
I'm not advocating skipping college to become a pro athlete (a very difficult path), but I am suggesting that there may be other hands-on experiences that would benefit a high-schooler more than a college degree.
How you are going to live your life is 90% determined by the way you were raised before the age of 18 or so. I think going to college has very little to do with it.
