Default UFC 84: BJ Penn v. Sean Sherk

Looking a little far into the future, as this one won't go for another month and a half, but I'm already excited. This one has a chance to be an absolutely phenomenal fight.

BJ wins the first two rounds, then Sherk wins the next three or stops him late. Take it to the bank.

Sherk is a poor man's Hughes. BJ smoked Hughes once, and then looked very tough against him in the second bout before getting hurt.

BJ by sub in round 2. Take it to the bank.

Sherk isn't a poor man's HUghes, they're much different fighters. Hughes has a good submission acumen, SHerk isn't much in terms of sub proficiency. Sherk has very good technical stand up, Hughes does not. Different guys.

But at they're core their best aspects are their wrestling, and their strength. Sherk isn't as good a wrestler as Hughes, and he's not as big or as strong as Hughes.

True, but they utilize their wrestling differently. For instance, Hughes like to either take people straight back and trip their legs up, OR he like to pick people up and slam them down. SHerk prefers to do a straight, solid double leg where he flares his opponents legs out to the side, trying to land directly in side mount

Does how they utilize it really matter that much, especially when they're fighting a guy with as good a takedown defense as BJ has?

You yourself said Hughes is a better wrestler than Sherk, and he certainly didn't find taking down BJ very easy.

True, but a lot of that is because Hughes was trying to strike and hitting single legs, which allows flexibility to play more a role. In the second fight, I'm pretty sure the first time he went for a double and got both legs, he finished.

    Reasonable I guess.

I still think Sherk is going to have enough trouble worrying about BJ beating him up on the feet to where he's not going to be able to just recklessly shoot in like he did against Kenny, and Hermes.
