Tough call to make - so as Pimach said, I could see it go either way. Kos went out as he went down (you can see his leg twitch - a sure sign that the brain short-circuited for a second there) but he did come to, put his hands up and throw his legs up to try to catch guard as Thiago pounced (which he never did and perhaps would have been enought reason for the ref to give Kos a couple seconds before jumping in). At the same time though, he did still appear to be in la la land a bit.

People have recovered from flash KOs like that. Nog would have lost to Herring. He was hurt and moving, should have given him a few more seconds.

Seriously I think we have seen that happen plenty of times to see a fighter be able to tie up the opponent until he is able to recover. Other recent examples include Marcus Davis getting dropped and hurt with a head kick from Paul Taylor only to pull off an armbar a few minutes later, another would be Marquardt getting dropped from Leites only to recover and turn it into a great fight. Look at Veach vs. Grice, the ref let Veach fight his way out after being hurt only to stop the fight as soon as Grice gets rocked.

If we go by the fighter being hurt or temporarily stunned you would just jump in every time a fighter is knocked down.

As for the eyes rolling back that doesnt mean the person is knocked out it could have just been from the impact of the punch. I remember watching a fight science show where Mark Dellagrotte was demonstrating that you can keep your eyes from closing while being punched. Florian gave him a relatively light punch, they then showed it in slow motion and the force of the punch forced Dellagrottes eyes to roll up. He was not hurt or unconscious. Point is once Koscheck landed he seemed alert and was preparing for Thiago to pounce.

    Poor stoppage by the ref.

I hear what you guys are saying. I guess the issue really is the inconsistency from one ref or one fight to another ... or sometimes even incidents within the same fight. But, I don't think you can fault a ref for stopping a fight when the guy did in fact go out - the leg twitch and the stiff back are dead giveaways that he went out, even if only briefly - and did have that "far away look" in his eyes even after the fight had been stopped.

Metsfan, they also tend to give veterans an extra chance. Obviously if you aren't moving it should be stopped, but his head was off the mat and he may have been able to take a few shots and still pulled guard to recover. also since that guy was brazilian, I assume he has great BJJ and could have finished him off with a choke (the way Fedor did after he dropped Tim)

another come from being dropped victory PJ is Tim against AA in their 2nd fight.

i thought he was repeatedly jumping in at the guy with his striking and it was a well timed loaded up bomb. he as out on his way down. if his opponent pounced he would have taken unnecessary punishment and it would have ended soon anyway. too bad but thats the way the head bounces in the fight game.

look at sonnen, he was tossed right on his head just before the submission and had some cob webs going on before he was subbed. i was bummed watching two of my personal favorites go down in chael and josh.
but then again, i may be retarded
