I dont think Machida is boring so I would start out sentence saying "Machida is boring." I would say people think he is boring but I disagree with that opinion.

Despite Varners horribly boring style I agreer he is a great wrestler. I hope for his sake he can get over the hump and win one this year. I know he has struggled winning the championship matches so I will be pulling for him this year.
You're the one asking me why I find Machida boring, no one else asked me that. I was very clear that Machida is boring by MMA standards, not by my standard. Go back and read it again, you'll get it.

I'm not sure if I got everyone in there, but I gave it my best shot. I guess I should amend my statement to Jake Varner is ranked 3rd on the senior freestyle circuit, higher than anyone competing in the NCAA.

I went ahead and answered it for you pj and it sure did hurt my case. My new amended statement is Jake Varner is ranked 3rd in the freestyle senior circuit, higher than anyone presently competing in the NCAA.

My other favorite wrestler in that weight class, 6th year senior, Jake Herbert is ranked 9th.

Excellent, that is a tremendous accomplishment. I do hope though that he is not stuck at 2nd or third his whole career. I know he has not been able to win anything since arriving on the college scene so I hope that changes in the future.

He's sort of like the Philadelphia Eagles in this sense, isn't he?

    Ha Ha, good one Zapp.

Actually he was your University Nationals champion as a freshmen, dismantling Jake Herbert in the finals.

Speaking of Jake Herbert, by this point in his career, he had made one finals appearance and was again dismantled, this time by the undersized Ben Askren.

Herbert of course went on to finally win a national championship (over Varner when he was a freshmen) and I wish him the best as he's one of my favorite wrestlers. I hope he sticks with freestyle, even though he's hovering right around number 10 or so. I wish there was a way for him to get out of Varner's weight class, (185) as he just can't seem to compete with the Bakersfiled, California product.

You need to include Brad Pataky, Konrad Dudziak, Clayton Foster, Brent Jones, Scott Steele, Jared Rosholt, Kyle Massey, Zachery Rey(Lehigh heavy who I missed the missed time).

Varner is the highest NCAA guy ranked at 3rd, but there are four NCAA wrestlers ranked 4th.

Varner is a better Freestyler than Folkstyle,r I believe his only Folkstyle win over Herbert was at Midlands while Herbert was training Freestyle full time.
With a title this year Herbert will be a top ten wrestler of the decade.
Varner has yet to win a title.

I find it interesting that while Herbert was training full time with the nations elite, Varner was able to wear him out and hold him to a single point. One can only speculate on what would happen if Herbert had to deal with the D1 wrestling grind that year, Varner may have majored him.

And while we're speculating on how the future might turn out, by finishing his career out with a couple of titles, Varner will match Ben Askrens record of 2,2,1,1 and position himself as an NCAA all time great. Add the success he's likely to have in freestyle, and Mr. Herbert may one day point at the win he had over a freshman Varner as probably the high light of his wreslting career.

We are very fortunate to be able to see these two outstanding wrestlers in the prime of their careers. I look forward to following it all and seeing how it turns out.

Come on pj, you get run off these blogs too easy. Here's something new to get you back posting on this blog, and you can ignore the beating I gave you last week.

There is a new rumor floating around the Internet regarding a possible light heavyweight clash between former UFC light heavyweight and heavyweight champion Randy Couture and the undefeated Lyoto Machida.
The reports state that sources from within the Xtreme Couture camp have confirmed Couture's interest but at this point, it's just that.

Any possibility of a fight between the UFC Hall-of-Famer and Machida would rely on the outcome of the Quinton Jackson vs. Keith Jardine light heavyweight fight at UFC 96.

If Jackson were to win as he is expected, he would automatically get a title shot against Rashad Evans at UFC 100 if both fighters are healthy. That would mean that Machida gets left out of the title picture once again and would pave the way for a fight with Couture.

    http://www.FightLine.com/news/mma/20...re/index.shtml

I like this fight a lot. Could be a very technical fight and one where we get to see what Machida can to against a guy that's not injured, (Tito Ortiz), just getting his feet wet in the game, (Silva) or way over rated and one dimensional, (Sokujou sp?). Sure Randy is nearly eligible for social security, but the old man still has a fight or two left in him. If this fight happens and Machida can win, I've got him in my top 3 at LHW and deserves a shot at Rampage.
    Lets go Brent!
